Anyone know if there is a nonstop planned for Bangkok on any airline??  I haven't seen any.  But a LAX-BKK nonstop would definately get my business.   I'd pay a bit extra to avoid a stop.

Zeus,

One of the reasons given for the justification of building the new airport was that Thailand wanted to attract other airlines to make it a hub.  The current airport was considered to small to accomplish this so I'm hoping once the new airport is open we'll see some non stops from the west coast.

I knew about the new airport, but didn't know it was so far along & close to completion (even though I must have gone past the site on the freeway 6 times last year (or at least gotten close).

A couple of sites I found on the new airport:

http://www.bangkokairport.co.th/newversion...ar-main_eng.asp

http://www.airport-technology.com/projects...x.html#bangkok4

Personally, I thought this would take till 2010 or longer (or never) to complete.  Who knows, maybe it still will - TIT.

Zeus,

Thai currently has an order for five A340-500 which presumably will serve the US west and east coasts.  They are however in dispute with the EU about the amount of chemicals in Thai prawns and Thaksin has chosen to link the two i.e. if you don't buy our prawns we won't buy your planes.  Notwithstanding that argument, the aircraft are now due for delivery in 2005 (it was originally meant to be this year).

If, and when, the aircraft come online it will be interesting to see what seat configuration they decide to go with i.e. whether they adopt the same attitude as Singapore with their two classes (premium economy and raffles) or whether they decide to pack them into economy similar to Emirates.

A few months ago if I remember correctly I read in the BKK Post that Thai Air has applied for landing rights from JFK.
