Charges for extra luggage on way out to Los?

Recommended Posts

Will be moving out to Thailand in a couple if months and Thai Air has said we can bring 20 kilos each.

Not a lot to start a new life. Enquired into extra baggage freighted over separately, but very expensive plus a lot of hassle from London.  Was quoted about £200 for one 20-kilo case. That included 50% discount  for travelling with Thai Air and handling charges both ends. On top of this there is the customs hassle and paper work.

Wondered if anyone knew what was acceptable in the way of “slightly over weight” at check in, and also the maximum weight you can get away with allowed for hand luggage.

Thanks guys.

Mike.

Mike,

See my previous post under excess/baggage charges/solutions.

The link for Heathrow freight agents is:

The amount of excess that you can get away with depends on how full the flight is with both passengers and freight.  In general terms you can pretty much bank on getting away with an extra 7-10 kgs per person.

If you intend taking a load of hand baggage (normally the maximum is one piece weighing 9 kgs) don't have it on your person at check-in.  Once you arrive with it in the departure lounge the most they will normally do is take it off you and label it up to go as hold baggage.

Regards,

Tom

Mike,

I take it you never flew with Thai Airways and joined their frequent flier scheme before? If you had, just one trip would have made you eligible for an extra 10 kilos on top of your normal allowance.

Hi Richard,

Originally it was to be the 18th Oct, but got a call today to say there was a hitch with the flight suddenly becoming overbooked, and were re-booked for the 23rd. Oct. A pain because yesterday we set the 17th. for completion on the house sale.

Looking forward to being in Pattaya, and meeting up with yourself and Pen again. (and also coming over to HK later in the year)

Kes sends her love,

Mike.

Gary,

I assume you spoke to EVA reservations.  :-/

Nearly all airlines treat golf, ski and windsurf equipment differently from normal baggage.

http://frequentflyer.oag.com/traveller_ser...ces/baggage.asp

In EVA's case they take a set of golf clubs to weigh a nominal 6 kg against your baggage allowance of 20 kg.  This would leave you 14 kg of other baggage.

If you fly Evergreen Deluxe you would receive 25 kgs baggage leaving you with 19 kg for your other baggage.

If in doubt speak to the EVA staff at Heathrow (0208 745 7779) rather than reservations.  They are very helpful and not in the least bureaucratic.

Hope this is of some help.

Regards,

Tom
