Free Speach in LOS

Recommended Posts

A recent thread refered to "Scouser, Geordie or Glaswegian" accents which I think was refering to various Brit ethnic groups and the difficulty in understanding various ethnic dialecs.  Reminded me that freedom of speech in LOS is a priceless commodity and makes Pattaya bar conversations lively. I thought the socialist extremists had advanced further in England than the US. Aren't you Brits facing the possibility of loss of your jobs, jail time, and compulsionary psychological treatment for using ethnic phrases (i.e., rag head, chink) in public? It's happening in the US (to whites only).

LTGTR,

Hate to disappoint you but Scousers, Geordies and Glaswegians aren't ethnic groups, nor are they derogatory terms.  And Delhi doesn't refer to  somewhere where you buy a sandwich at lunchtime; but you would have known that, wouldn't you?

Tom 8)

Anyway, I thought I was on your "list" and you didn't read my posts.

LTGTR,

I would hate to think that anyone takes any posts as being gospel, they are merely people's takes on various threads.  If you have any issues on a personal level please feel free to PM me.

in england refering to some one as a brummie, scouser geordie, glasweigien, etc is not an insult, it is just a description of the persons home county, or maybe their accent.

ie. if you spoke about someone and refered to him as a geordie, a uk resident would think of him as someone who came from newcastle. nothing more.

comparing the above with descriptions like rag head which are very  insulting to a person is a non starter and i dont intend this as flame to you but being an american you obviously have not got a clue what you are talking about in your above post.

Papa,

To clarify the state of play in Britain for you:

If one is of similar description as myself ie white, single, hetrosexual, employed, homeowner etc - then one is entiltled to fcuk all in Britain apart from the privilege of paying taxes  >:(

If one just happens to be coloured, with kids or gay or both, likes to save whales, wears a rag on the head, can't speak English therefore can't get a job but can fill out the welfare claim forms no problem and is homeless then, the goverment will bend over backwards to please you and bill single white boy for the outlay in the form of higher taxes which can't be avoided because one is an honest hard working citizen. ???

And heaven forbid S.W.B if he complains about this system as he will automatically be labelled as a racist or bigot or both.  :(

Others may not agree.........just my humble opinion.

Hope this clarifys the state of Britain today for you.

Dode

Woah Chaps, lets not get our knickers in a twist on this thorny ethnic lark.

Papa the dictionary definition of ethnic is "of a racial group or resembling the clothes of a primitive people"

In the U.K we have 4 diffrent countries in 1 tiny island, historicaly given nicknames by each other; Taffy (Welsh)

Paddy (Irish) Jock (Scots) and the English were regionalised into Georgdie- N.East, Scouse- Liverpool,

Brummie- Birmingham etc.

Dont know how far back this goes, but it probably over 100 years, there is no insult to it , unless the F word is put in front of course. perhaps to the modern P.C foreign mind it may sound on par with the newer groups from diffrent ethnic backgrounds. historicaly we in the U.k accepted these names as the norm, and didnt give them a second thought. All has changed now of course and suddenly there is a problem.

As you say some names are meant to be insulting, the 2 you mentioned are examples.

Personaly I think that legal actions against white people in the racial mix, is unbalanced, the ethnic people can call you what the "F" they like in their own language and you havnt got a clue what they are saying, but the intent to insult is still there,  they dont get prosecuted as you would,  calling them a name.

in a language they understand.

There must be more important things in the world to argue about !

Guys,

The original post that this thread refers to related to the mis-spelling of names on flight tickets, and was:

"The mis-spelling of names is a pretty normal occurence, I would imagine even more so now that e-bookers has moved its entire booking facility to Delhi.  I am sure most of the operators can speak excellent English but that doesn't help much if they are speaking to a Scouser, Geordie or Glaswegian.  (Sorry for any offence guys - none intended)."

For anyone in UK that is a pretty inoccuous post.  Papa opened this thread by making some linkage to ethnic groups to which LTGTR made his response addressed to Tom which I took to mean me and I responded accordingly.  If his comments were directed at Papa then I apologise for that misunderstanding.  However, I do fail to see where all this white supremist nonsense is coming from since the very same points raised by dode are the subject of considerable coverage in the UK broadsheet press at the moment.  As dode rightly pointed out any attempt at initiating debate on the perceived disparity between the treatment of various ethnic and "lifestyle" groups and the mainstream population is undermined by accusations of racism etc.  The reaction and references to white supremists and Montana would seem to reinforce the point that he was making.

Thanks 'Tom' for setting us straight once again.

I will delete all my previous posts on this this thread.

You really annoy me with your "know it all" diatribe.

The fact that I read each post as so condescending in it's manner is what annoys me.

You won't be in Pattaya next month, will you?

John

Dode,

Appreciate your testimonial.  Conditions are much the same in the USA.  The imminent dangers to free men in the USA, UK, etc. (IMHO) were best described by smart men at http://www.barefootsworld.net/14signs.html   You (I) can't be silent about the truth!

I expect socialist extremist advocates to try to distort my posts when it fits their purpose. As I don't kowtow to their party line. But I don't take kindly to their (IMHO feeble) attempts to malign me.

Pattaya provides me a relief from problems in teh USA. The LOS may be the best sanctuary if all goes quickly wrong at home.

Obviously LTGTR has deleted some posts since I last logged on. Just like to empathize that I am not a white supremist/racist etc but was mere agreeing (possibly over-exaggerating and tarring all minorities with the same brush maybe) with papa's post that things in the UK are similar to present day USA  ;) ie: that it appears you have less rights if you are white Joe Public than any other creed or colour  ???

BTW LTGTR,

You wrote: Thanks 'Tom' for setting us straight once again.

And

Wow,wouldn't that make my 1st trip to Pattaya special!

Obviously you and Cheshire Tom don't see eye to eye on a lot of things. I would just like to point out that the majority of Tom's posts (which are Pattaya orientated) give advice about LOS which may or may not be of use to others while planning their vacation. As you state that you are about to make your 1st trip to Pattaya I would have thought that some of Tom's posts may be of valuable guidance to you rather than being dismissed as "know it all" diatribe  ???

Why not call a truce  8) you might meet one day and end up best of buddies  ;D

Dode,

Thank-you for your kind words ;) but to be fair to LTGTR he didn't say the content of my posts annoyed him, only the manner in which they were written (very slowly, using two fingers). :-/  If my writing style causes personal offence to LTGTR, or anyone else for that matter, there is not really very much I can do about that.

At the end of the day any forum is about the exchange of views and information.  I would defend myself against the "know-it-all" tag since I hardly, if ever, post about the beer bars, go-gos, and bar girls of South Pattaya because I recognise that there are many more people on this board much better qualified than me to provide an insight to these topics and I value their contribution as such.  I would expect that those same people view my posts in exactly the same manner - a contribution; nothing more and nothing less.

Regards from a wet and windy Cheshire,  ;)

As someone who has had the pleasure of meeting Cheshire Tom I can vouch he is a sound guy and the least likely to be labelled a know-it-all or condescending.  I really don't see where you are coming from on this one John (LTGTR) - why have fallings-out with people you are maybe sharing a hotel with?  As I always say. let's play nice and we can all get the best out of here.  I think that the original flashpoint was a discussion of UK-US-rest of world politics where there was a slight disagreement and LTGTR put Tom on a list of people he was ignoring.  I don' t think that's a very free-speech approach to things, John.  If you want to live in a country where people can't say what they think try Iraq.  Not a flame John, just saying in a very mild way that I think you are wrong and Tom can be a very good source of info for you and I think you told us you were a relative newbie and were considering coming to live in Pattaya which incidentally has a small, close-knit community of falang vistors and especially ex-pats so any friction is inadvisable.

For the record Tom is a very knowledgeable guy on LOS and actually very unassuming in his approach and no, he isn't a relative!!!!  :)

I hope to meet you in due course John and (genuinely) all the best.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Papa started this thread by talking about "Brummie, Scousere, Glaswegian" ethnic groupings.  Quite correctly he was put right on the fact that these are not ethnic grouping but geographical groupings. However, I did notice that he made the mistake that I frequently hear from Americans, and also regularly hear from fellow British from "south of the Border".  The error being reference to "Great Britain", or the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland", to give full title, as "England".   For this reason I always make a point of saying that I am "Scottish", and that England is "merely one part of the United Kingdom". I know this will bring howls of derision, but, guys, think carefully, I am right when I say that.  This "England" state of mind is one reason why you find many Scots, and Welsh and Ulstermen voicing opposition to England.  If you refer to "Britain or the UK" this hostility disappears immediately.

Dode, I'm afraid I have to agree about our rights in UK (and it is the same in USA).  If we had the same rights as all those flooding into the UK right now we Scots, Welsh and N. Irish could be screaming "racist" against our Engsh friends, although personally I would NEVER consider doing that.  The truth is that I feel "British" first, and "Scottish" is a sub-division of my Britishness.

Dougie,

As a sassenach, I have to take issue with you about people refering to G.B as England, I thought the Americans called us Limeys, or Brits, unless that is a thing of the past. Seing as a large majority of them have Scots- Irish ancesters, the thought of them refering to this Island as England is news to me.  Heathrow is in England they may say they are flying to England, but they always say Europe dont they ?   Talking of Heathrow, for several years there used to be a sign over the exit tunnel saying " Welcome to Britain " I often wondered if the sign would say the same on a  tunnel in Glasgow- Belfast or Cardiff !

I fully understand your claiming to be Scottish, I have not claimed to be anything but English for years, in my view Britishness has lost its meaning. Since devolution, we are all more sensitive about our roots, my best friends are Scots and I love the place, especially the Whisky Trail, Grantown, Dufftown etc.

Scots, Welsh, Ulstermen have have voiced opposition to England for hundreds of years, and not because of what the Americans call Britain.

Lang may your lum reek!  ;)
