UK "Chip and PIN" Cards

I have just had all my debit and credit cards replaced with the new Chip and PIN version.

I am interested to hear if anyone has any experience of using these cards in Thailand, as they are supposed to be compatible.

I have just changed to a Nationwide FlexAccount, with ATM card and also a Visa credit card, both of which are free of transaction charges for foreign use, but you all probably knew that anyway

We use this "new" type of cards for 25 years in France...

and I never ever had any problems with my Visa or MasterCard abroad

 

For Thailand, I made 9 trips in the last 6 years

and my cards worked in all ATM machines : airport, Bkk, ChangMai, Pattaya...

 

So be relax. Should work for you too

Yeah, they have been around in Austria as well for a while now. BUT - not all ATMs in Thailand accept Mastercards pr foreign ATM (Maestro or Cirrus) for the matter. I would say, mabye 90% do, but there are always some who don't. Just look out for the Mastercard, Maestro or Cirrus Logo on the Machines, if one does not take it, in Bangkok you will not have to walk far to find one that will. Upcountry is a bit different - i went to Buri Rams Prakhon Chai District with a friend whow as visiting from Austria 3 years ago, he could not find an ATM that took his Visa or Mastercard back then. But as an emergency option you can alwats withdraw money with your Master or Visa at any Bank Branch so no worries here.

use ATM next to the Bank so if something goes wrong you can get ur card back...

And also, presumably while they're open?

 

Are you speaking from personal experience, Hannibal? Would they be happy to return the card to you or would they want some proof of who you are first, such as sight of your passport etc?

An aside.............the chip and pin cards issued here work fine in the UK..........i have an international atm card issued by SCB in Pattaya,with which i have withdrawn funds in the UK . SCB card is Mastercard/Cirrus.
