  1. UBC is expensive unless you have it in multiple rooms (like an hotel). Something like 2.5k per month in fact. You can go to Yensabai but you could also try the View Talay condos. OK I live in one but I have been happy here for 1 1/2 years. Many adverts on the bulletin boards in the reception in each block. You would then be dealing direct with the owner.
  2. There won't be a pension scheme when I get there or you'll have to be 100yrs old to claim it. As for tax, tell them to fuck off.
  3. Depends upon how long into the future you are talking. A couple of years ok, but 10 years plus and your 4k will, I suspect, be the lower end of what is required.
  4. As Steve says, exchange rates will fluctuate. Against GBP/USD/EUR the THB has appreciated by over 10% and is likely to increase further in the short term. The best rate for GBP was 78 compared to a paltry 66 or so now. Thats a lot of lost / gained income over large amounts. The prudent thing to do would be to make sure that any financial plans include provision for inflation and reasonable exchange rate movements. The reality is that costs here are not as low as they once were but then salaries and asset values in the developed world have risen over the same period. Very simply, if you think you'll need 60k per month, make sure you have more than that, perhaps 80k and then have some inflation linked increases.
  5. Don't even worry about it now but likely transfer of a sum to fund capital purchases and then income stream as you receive it, most likely managed through the internet. The rules on what you have to do visa wise post retirement are likely to change numerous times if you are some way off from retiring.

I retain Citibank Tokyo, no fees, but with a minimum balance.
  7. I was in the market as a risk analyst for years and I've seen more come and go that most. That includes paper fortunes. In any bull market, everyone is an expert. There is even a story about the original JP MOrgan selling out prior to the 1929 crash when he heard his shoeshine boy giving him share tips. Now people believe the shit they read on their computer. Desperation drives the greedy, they come, they go, we remain.
  8. It has its place and why not ask for Bt400 when some idiot may pay it ? C'mon Larry, not everyone would live in your place either. They ask a figure and will take a reasonable offer. Seems sensible to me.
  9. Not only to UK 008 best 009 next best 007 3rd best try the TOT website for more details
  10. And tomorrow could see a fall of 1.75% +
  11. La Royale Beach has been plugged again and again and still hasn't sold out - too expensive. Northshore interested me but some of the better units were "reserved" even before initial launch. Good gearing on initial downpayments but service charges high. As rental investments, the market is way oversupplied already and yields are low. Limited upside on resales as people are already finding it hard to sell units and houses because they are simply overvalued by greedy estate agents. In a developed location, you know what is going to be around you but many new developments are in areas where there is going to be continual development of some sort (unknown) for years to come, just look at View Talay Residence !
  12. Talk to agents. It is their business to do what you and the owner want to arrange. You will pay more than the 6mth rate but less than the 1 week or 1 month rate. No problem doing business that way.
  13. Not really but we constantly get people posting here and elsewhere about costs rising and service deteriorating ( the twats at the airport now try and fleece you for Bt2k and then sometimes try to fuck you over for the tolls) but people do nothing. People complain here but not to those who give the shit service. Oh, its only a few dollars and I'm on holiday. Next time oh, its only a shit old car. Next tim, oh, its only another 10 dollars. When are people going to reward the shit service with no more business and go elsewhere instead of putting up and then bleating all over the internet about it ? Thats my point.
  14. Don't touch these cowboys (www.fairproperties.com) with a bargepole.
  15. Sorry but if people get shit on and fucked over and do nothing about it then the service will never improve and the bastards will continue to take us for the mugs that some of us actually are.
  16. I've had very few problems with TOT and my ADSL speedds have greatly improved. Just a few teething problems in the beginning.
  17. London to Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Manila, Cebu, Taipei, Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, Seoul 14 Apr 06 - 30 Jun 06 4 days / 2 months Economy 379 01 Sep 06 - 31 Oct 06 4 days / 2 months Economy 429 01 Nov 06 - 07 Dec 06 4 days / 2 months Economy 399 Maybe not the best for now but booking Xmas now for 400 + around 100 taxes etc. gives you peace of mind.
  18. Yensabai rooms are in multiples of 40sqm. I looked a couple of years ago and turned it down, not because of price or the rooms themselves but I did not feel comfortable with the walk from 2nd Road to the condos. Too many people with no obvious reason to be around there at night. I have seen also in recent months that prices have gone up. To be honest, anything at 10k or above there is way overpriced. Bt8k or thereabouts for a good quality room would be fair if you can accept the security aspect and really want to live that close. Centre condo is another option but it has a reputation of break ins. I suspect that each apartment has differing security though.
  19. Where is it ? Name of building / address / pictures ?
  20. There is a UK lawyer who advertises in the Pattaya mail and comes here every 6 weeks. No other information unfortunately.
  21. 150k = 5k per day Denny ? Have you won the lottery ?
  22. No problem with guests but you may have to pay more for more than one girl. Does not encourage them but fuck all they can do about it.
  23. My girlfriend's sister is back in Thailand from Holland and after spending some time with the family, she wants to come stay in Pattaya for a week. She has a couple of kids with her western husband and needs a 2+ bedroomed property for a week. A communal pool would be ideal. Unfortunately a condo will no do. So if anyone has such a property or knows of one which we could rent, then please let me know. Thanks
  24. Looking at the Scandibar website, it appears that the discounts for membership are not being applied to any of the hotels there including the Sandy Springs. In fact, their rates are higher than walk in rates. Something to consider here perhaps ?
  25. Fair Properties have a reputation for corruption. If you are selling for say Bt5m then they might have the contracts for the buyer at Bt5.5m, charging the commission on Bt5m and pocketing the other Bt0.5m. How do I know ? because I have seen the paperwork, I know people who have tried to deal with them, I know some of their ex staff (they never last long - constant running advert) and I know the recipient of a backhander who denied it and and then admitted it. Wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire.
