You do have a point about the road being blocked off from Pattaya-Naklua Road. That can add another 5 minutes to the trip making the U-turn. Music Festival...damn! More awful traffic!

Books are not cheaper. Even buying second hand, 20 ebooks read would pay for the cost of the Kindle I purchased (I pay about 160 baht per second hand book). Ok, if I return them, I get 50% credit, so make that 40 books. Easily done in a few months.

You're right, but as an obvious nitpicker, I think you get the main point where you were mistaken. Adding a minor omission on my point that the Dolphin thingie was the start of 4 roads (rather than 5) was ... picky, once again. Are you not getting out lately? For the elucidation of those who might not be fully aware of the enormity of the Dolphin nexus, notice below that Pattaya Sai Neung (Beach Road) does, in fact, start at the Dolphin Circle/Roundabout/Island.

I just don't get you guys who are worried about your live-in/wife being awakened by a reading light. Thai women can sleep in the daytime without aircon during a heat wave. You think a light at night in an air-conditioned room is going to make them stir? If it does, they'll just turn on the fucking TV anyway.

As I understand it, IPads, Kindle Fires, and other tablet devices that use your typical screens found on mobiles and tablets are not easily readable in the sunlit conditions (not that I sit in the sun that much). The thing that convinced me to go with the Kindle was its single purpose of looking like the printed page. It cannot be read in the dark because it has no backlight (just like a book), and it is perfectly readable in sunny conditions (just like a book). I was convinced to get the basic model by its midrange size...bigger than a mobile and smaller than a tablet. The fact that it was cheaper than a multi-functional tablet was also a plus. The lack of a backlit screen means the battery life is superb as well. Once Big Brian clued me into the "indexing" issue, and I reduced the number of books to be indexed, the battery indicator hasn't moved off full for two days, and I've been reading 5-6 hours a day (insomnia or just the story I'm reading makes me too alert to sleep). In answer to my OP, I'm happy!

If you're referring to what some call the Dolphin Roundabout, it's the northern starting point for Beach Road, as well as Pattaya North, Second Road, and Pattaya-Naklua Road...after all, it's a roundabout

The main advantage of ebooks is that for those of us without access to libraries and English language bookstores, virtually all books one would read are available. The Kindle is just a convenient way too access them, you Luddite! You can continue to enjoy paper books in your English speaking country without worry.

LOL. I've been there, and I came back. Re Big_Brian's post, he gave an explanation why loading up a ton of books without complaint from the Kindle, and then the initial battery short life occurred. Now, whenever I open a book, I get a message that I don't have enough storage. It's that damned indexing. I cursor down a page and it gives me a definition of "the".

My Kindle (shown below) arrived last week, and I loaded it up with about 1500 books. I was in the middle of reading a Vince Flynn novel, and since I now had his entire bibliography on the Kindle, I decided to finish the book with the new gadget. It's great. The Kindle is small enough to fit in my back pocket. I'm hoping I don't forget it's there and sit on it. Initially the battery life was considerably less than the 10 hours they claimed, but after I turned off the wifi interface (which just gets you into Amazon's book selling site), the battery is quite good. I've not measured it, but I suspect I could read all day. Reading outside in the sun is a breeze. The letters are crisp black against a white background, and easy to read. The manual controls (buttons rather than touch screen) take a bit of getting used to, but it doesn't take long to get used to clicking forward. The software is generally a piece of shit, and it doesn't recognize any directory structure for organizing books...there is some software I've tried to make "collections", but it doesn't seem to work very well. I don't think I really need to manage a library of 1500 books anyway, so I'll probably empty the device of all but ones I plan to read in the coming months. So, there you have it. I'm happy as can be, because now I can get all the books by authors that write series and read them in order, rather than reading them in the order I happen to find them in a second hand book shop. I figure it'll pay for itself in a month or two.
