Loy Krathong -- BKK or Pattaya?

Recommended Posts

Since my company has kindly decided to shut down for week at Thanksgiving and Christmas, I now have no excuse for not coming back to LOS and want to be there for Loy Krathong in late November. Which city would be better to see and experience this amazing looking festival? Anyone been in either city during LK? Your sage counsel will be greatly appreciated. :D

I think anywhere there is a river, the festival is to thank the river goddes for her water for the crops. My mate was in Patong last year and tried to float his Khatong in the sea, but it kept coming back to shore, he went further and further out and eventually got swamped by a wave, good fun, but I dont like the sea at night. I will be up country by a big river. :livid

Sukhothai and Ayutthaya provide the best settings for the historical theme of the festival. Given a choice of Bangkok or Pattaya, I would probably opt for Pattaya because it is more compact and the whole length of Beach Road is an eyeopener as literally hundreds of Thais are involved in making the krathongs during the day prior to the festival proper in the evening.

I spent last Loy Krathong in Jomtien....the beach was full of people floating candles into the sea and launching candles with plastic parachutes into the sky. Actually, lots of fun and I enjoyed it. I rent a bungalow between Jomtien Beach and Sukhumvit road and sitting on my porch looking at the candles float by in the sky was neat.

This year I will go with a bunch of Thai friends in a private minivan to Sukhothai for the festival...They plan on sleeping under the stars and not in hotel room...these are mature responsible folk and not thrill seeking kids...I'm a bit hesitant about the sleeping rough idea and am thinking of booking a hotel room for my TG and I. :(

I've only celebrated Loi Krathong in Pattaya and will do so again this year. It's a beautiful festival and a lot of the locals adorn traditional costumes adding enormously to the atmosphere.

Whether you are in Bangkok or Pattaya, you are sure to have a great time. :nod
