Will be in LOS for 2-3 weeks and it would be handy if I could get insured to drive the GF's old p-up truck. I have an I.D.P, but do I take my U.K license too ?

The truck is insured for Si to drive, don't think that covers me. What do you blokes do about driving in LOS ? Is there anywhere in PTTY that you know of, where it could be done ?

That question can not really be answered without knowing what insurance she has on her car. Usually, the insurance covers the car and as long as you have a legal permit to drive, you are covered. But be aware that these basic insurances (the stickers you can get at the car dealerships) do not have high coverage.

If you already have an International Drivers License, that is what the cops want to see. If you plan to stay longer, get a thai DL with your International License. Easier on the cops (english reading is not in their exam). A Thai license may in fact even be required by the insurance. IO have heard stories of claims being rejected because the driver did not have a Thai drivers license. I'd say - better safe then sorry.

Whatever you do, make sure you ARE insured.

Thanks cybers,

I was thinking about getting a Thai license, my mate who has one, told me you have to have a non immigrant O visa or something. He has one, because his wife is Thai. Do you have to sit an exam ? Si's insurance cost 10,000 bht I think.

At least they drive on the correct side of the road. I should be able to match their style of driving :clap2

If it's not in stumbling distance or can't be reached by a baht-bus, I don't want to go... <huh

hi,

Youcan get a thai drivers license with your international license...no exam or any stuff that I am aware off. Also, it is possible to get one with a tourist visa but that seems to depend very much on where you are applying...you need a letter from the local immigration office stating your address in thailand which is easy to obtain and should be free (should :D ).

you can also check out the thaivisa board for probably more up to date information on this subject

Thanks again cybers

Have found out you must insure in countryyou are driving in. My travel insurance covers me for any personal injury while driving. Si's insurance is 3rd party only. Might send her money to cover me, with her company, for the time.

Cheers NNH
