Recommended Posts

hi, well im "supposed!" to be going to thailand on october 2oth, but! im not sure if i can go or not now, to cut a long story short ive been having chest/breathing problems for a few months now, and its touch and go if i have to cancel my flight with eva-air! obviously id only cancel the ticket on the doctors say-so.! so the thing is how much will i lose? or could i use the money ive paid towards the next tickets i buy? ive never cancelled tickets b4 so ive no idea! and i only wanna phone the travel agent as a last resort! so anyone got any ideas? i have annual travel insurance so i may be covered there anyway? cheers guys!

I've never cancelled tickets either, but I think it depends on two things:

1. the type of ticket you bought. The cheaper tickets are non-refundable and usually aren't changable. If they are changable theres usually a hefty fee. For flexibility, you have to buy the more expensive tickets.

2. the type of trip insurance you have will determine if the insurance company will cover the loss if the airline doesn't refund your fee.

EVA's cancellation charges on its discounted economy tickets are currently either 100 quid or 100% depending on the class of ticket that you have (H,V,L class etc). Your travel agent would also be within their rights to make an "administration charge" for their part. If the cancellation fee is less than 100% it will normally take 8-12 weeks to process any refund.

On United, from the USA, the cancellation fee for the suposedly "non-refundable tickets" is only $150. But if you follow up with a doctors note you will probably get the fee waived. I did.

On China Air the cancellation fee is $100.

It's possible that some travel agents could tack on a fee over and above the airline fee.

For hotels, Priceline has a medical cancellation fee of $25 per night for hotel bookings if it's for medical reasons.

The credit card I use has trip insurance as one of the free benefits. Most airlines will work with the customer especially if your a repeat customer in allowing you to rebook within one year.

Good luck on your medical treatment.
