Getting Sails Made & Chartering In Thailand

Recommended Posts

I'm considering having a new jib made for my C&C 30 MK1

It seems like I can save a fair bit by doing this.

Nice 135% in US w/ sumbrella on leach and foam in luff...1800US

El cheapo in US, no luff foam, (probably comes from asia.. 6 week wait) 1200US

Rolly Tasker in LOS about 1200US (seems to be same as 1800US model) and they say they can pack it so it will check in as carry on luggage.

Anyone with experience in this?

Also, I am chartering with Gulf Charters in Jomtien this November...Any thoughts?

Thanks, Sailfast

  • 4 weeks later...

The Dehler 39 I sail on has utilized Rolly Tasker sails for one season and they held up fine, both a main sail and a jib. The second season after being exposed to the sun too much they started coming apart. They were well worth the money we paid for them overall. More expensive sails also last us about 1 1/2 seasons with the amount of sailing we do.

Hope this helps.

No comment on your chartering question, I don't know Gulf Charters.

Sailfast, can't help you with the equipment questions but Phuket has (post-tsunami had?) a healthy yachting scene centered around the King's Cup Regatta in December. The Japanese guys I sail with used to go every year and chartered through SunSail.

One time they lost the yacht, a Benetton 40 footer, after it drifted off its anchor while they partied all night on Phi Phi.

"PIRATES," they cried, only for the boat to turn up 6 weeks later off Malaysia untouched! :clap1

Another yachtie I know, John the owner of Tradewinds on Chawang Beach in Samui, used to race from Pattaya to Samui.

The new Marina complex in Pattaya seems bloody expensive but in time that should adjust.
