Hi, will hopefully be arriving Dec/Jan with the intensions of Becoming a Scuba instructor. There are two dive centers in Pattaya which are able to help me do this and both provide full accomadation for 6 months. I been looking on the net and have found that I will be able to get accomadation a LOT cheaper if I just come out there. Thing is these tow dive firm will assist me geting the right visa. If I come out on a 30 visa will I be able to get a lond stay one while I am in thailand or will I have to return back to the U.K. and apply for one?

Many thanks. :fingers

Apply to the Thai consulate in Hull for a multiple entry non immigrant "O" visa. That will give you 90 days each time you come in / cross the border. You can extend each one for another 30 days at immigration for Bt1900.

If you want to stay 6 months, spend the first week or two in an hotel and look around for a condo.

Working requires a permit and i cannot guarantee that you will be able to get one even after training, or even a job for that matter. If you're on the Nanaplaza board, PM Limbo as I think he's in that game in Samui.

There is no 30 day Visa what you are refering to is just the 30 day entry stamp issued upon arrival

Yep entry stamp at airport or border crossing, man am i ever drunk suhiorry. but seriously get a one year multiple entry type "O" ( "O" is for other) gives you three months each visa run for a year, do a visa run just before the year is up and cha-ching you have another 3 months plus 30 day extension, on top of a year, for a grand total of one year and 4 months. You get this visa in your home country not here. I am not the genius here, this math has been worked out many times before.....Within this year you should be able to work out a job etc etc. man am i ever drunk. The last thing, don't work here without a permit, period, not even on the side, it can all get ugly in no time at all,,,,drunk now got to sleep

Good lick, I mean luck

Many thanks for your replies.

I am a bit confussed here. If I apply for a Non-Imm 'O' visa, I have to produce "Evidence Substanting purpose of visit" .

How could I provide this when I havent made my mind up as to which dive firm I am training with yet.

Thats why I wanted to come over and weigh both firms up and see which one was the best.

Once again . Thanks. :frustrated

If you are anywhere near Hull apply there as posted on the ThaiVisa web site they never ask for the Evidence Substanting purpose of visit. As Like Houston or Denver here in the States there know to bend the rules a bit.

Ahhh a good nights sleep and sober I am. All they want at the embassy is your money and a properly filled out application unless your a real scuzz ball you shouldn't have any problems. You can get this application here The Royal Thai Embassy . They list all their locations and you can download application forms in PDF format. This is the real Thai embassy there are many services that look like the embassy that process applications at sometimes a real hefty profit, you don't need them. The easiest one year Visa is the one year multiple entry type "O" or "other", the "B" for business is more complicated. With this visa you get three months at a time then you must either get an extension for 30 days at 1900 Baht or do the border run. Just before the expiration of the one year you can make another border run and that will give you another 3 months plus a 30 day extension for 1900 Baht. You don't need any permits to go to school but you would need a permit if you are going to work, and the school should be able to guide you through all that.

As Soi 7, Torrenova & Wrassel have said, apply to Hull for a muntiple entry non-Immigrant O visa. The cost is £90 (or £100 if you apply in person).

As for the "purpose of visit", put down something along the lines of "extended holiday" If you do ultimately get offered a job, the firm will doubtless have to provide some form of documentation as to why you are the right person for the job.

The Thai visa site - http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/ should be able to give you more specific information.

As far as I know, a Non Immigrant Class O does not qualify you to obtain a work permit.

There are different classes for differnt kind of work. In my case, it used to be EX before I got my residence permit.

- to perform official duties (Category "F")

- to conduct business / to work (Category "B")

- to invest with the concurrence of the Thai Ministries and Government Departments concerned (Category "IM")

- to invest or perform other activities relating to investment, subject to the provision of the established laws on investment promotion (Category "IB")

- to study, to come on a work study tour or observation tour , to participate in projects or seminars , to attend a conference or training course , to study as a foreign Buddhist monk (Category "ED")

- to work as a film-producer, journalist or reporter (Category "M")

- to perform missionary work or other religious activities with the concurrence of the Thai Ministries or Government Departments concerned (Category "R")

- to conduct scientific research or training or teaching in a research institute (Category "RS")

- to undertake skilled work or to work as an expert or specialist (Category "EX")

- other activities (Category "O")

but maybe there are exceptions to that rule, most expats that I know have either B or EX visas - but maybe i am wrong...i would check to make sure, just call any embassy or consulate and ask.

cheers

Lancashire Lad, have you thought about travelling over on a normal 30 day bog standard entry on arrival visa to Thailand, hang out in Pattaya and check out what each centre has to offer before signing up?

Then exit the country before your 30 days are up. Apply for the 60 Day Tourist Visa in Penang/Vientiane/Phnom Pen etc.. ,extendable (painlessly at Soi 8 in Pattaya) by another 30 days. By that time you will have a grasp of what goes on, and any other "Visa Run" to the local borders will be just part of your time there.

You will get cheaper digs than the dive school offer but I doubt it would be of the same standard/location as they can block book etc..

Good luck!!

I just smiled.

Or apply for the Tourest visa before leaving your country that will be issued with no problem and you can extend that 30 days cutting out the need to go to Penang/Vientiane/Phnom Pen.

Once again Thank for all your replys.

I have been trying to phone the Thai-consulate in Hull for the last two days but it is constantley engaged, will try again today.

The Dive shops wanted 550 USD or 22.000ThB per month for accomadation ,which I have been told is "To much".

Also please could anybody give me an idea as to how long 2,000,000ThB would last me in Thailand, I dont drink a lot and hope this amount would last for quite some time if I am carefull.

2.000.000 baht is enough to last you a couple of years of partying. Some guys manage to scrape by on 40,000 a month. But I wouldnt fancy trying it. 2mil can last a loong time provided your careful.

If youre on youre own you can easily get a decent condo for around 5,000-10,000 per month, that dive shop is taking the piss asking for 22,000 unless there putting you in a brand new condo with all the trimmings.

Agreed.

You will be able to live comfortably for 2 years (or more) on 2,000,000 baht. Obviously, you have to make the change from holiday mode to living here full time mode - in other words not going out drinking or on the prowl every night and so on.
