I have stayed at the RG for 2 week holidays & while it is very nice it is a bit far out of the city to be convenient . If you want to do anything such as shopping , go to the movies , go to the beach , eat out , visit the bars / go-gos means a baht-bus ride . Not too bad going into the city but going back at night usually costs 50-100 baht .

The LK Metropole is in the city & it is much better located with everything within walking distance . There are dozens of shops , restaurants & bars on your doorstep & it would be a better place to stay for your first trip .

As others have suggested I would only book for one month maximum . You will find yourself becoming a bit jaded with Pattaya after a few weeks , maybe less because it is your first trip . A couple of weeks travelling around Thailand would be a good idea . You could meet up with a suitable lady in Pattaya & take her with you .

I'm not sure how good you are at reading English but I would strongly advise you to read the book Private Dancer by Stephen Leather before you venture into the bar scene in Pattaya . You can download it for free on this site somewhere . This book will open your eyes to the way bar girls think & might help to stop you making any mistakes .

It's a 12 minute walk from the Residence Garden to the Free Lancer Bar; I have timed it. Not the best area for walking due to traffic but it can be done, at least when you are sober.

To answer another question. Phuket is in pretty good shape. Most places have been put back together and are open for business. More things to do during the daytime than Pattaya--not that I have anything against a pleasant evening on Walking Street.

@Turbo

LK Metropole looks really nice. However, I understand their condos are for sale and not for rent ?
