Thanks for that link. Checked it out. Seems like a lot of hoops to jump through, but if people are travelling anyway, it's a lot of miles, that's for sure.

 

As for NW -- their frequent flyer program is pretty good as far as getting free flights. From Japan, I can fly to BKK for 20,000 miles return. That same flight cost me 45,000 points with Star Alliance this summer.

 

The downside of using NW is that the arrival and departure times from BKK couldn't be any worse, and they have a cap for the number of seats per flight they allow to be booked on miles. Once the cap is reached, you have to use a "rule buster" -- double the miles -- which allows you to book any flight, but which then basically makes it the same mile-cost as Star Alliance.

 

Personally, I have credit cards that get me points for both plans: NW and Star Alliance. I only use the Star Alliance when I can't get a cheap seat on NW. But if you are able to plan trips months in advance, you should never have a problem using NW miles.
