Yo Drift,

Koh Samet is a great place to go for a few days, especially if the pattaya experience gets a bit too much for you!

It's recommended tht you take a girl with you, I normally do & enjoy interviewing the prospective candidates! Pattaya BGs love going to Samet.

I will be back in Pattaya in lte sept / early oct so pm me if you are around at the same time & we could head down together.

I have stayed on both hat sai keow & hat vong duen.

Both are fun with lots of watersports, bungalows, restaurants & bars to choose from.

On sai keow I once stayed at samed grand view where, upon walk in, I negotiated a 2200b a night rate for a beach front bungalow. The bungalows themselves are quite basic but have a/c, tv, hot showers, double bed & a verandah just metres from the ocean. Breakfast is rather good ( not buffet) and is included.

On Vong Duen I have stayed at Malibu, which can be booked in advance froma number of agencies in Pattaya or even ban phe. A 3 day /2 night package from pattaya for 2 people & including 2 nights stay in a deluxe bungalow & transport to & from your hotel in Pattaya, will come in at about 3000b each - 6000b total for a 2 night break.

However, if were going back to vong duen, I might try out talebure resort, of which i have heard good things about.

My friends and I stayed at Malibut on Ko Samet during the tsunami in 2004. Lucky chance we had moved our Phuket reservation to Ko samet for convenience. Georgous beach. great food. good bungalow with air and pool etc. Night time outdoor barbecues are stunning. Each of the 7 or 8 small hotels put out a spread where you pick your food, fish, crab, kabob etc. They cook it up fresh. 5 of us ate for about 35 USD on a warm evening outdoors, with the waves lapping.

Bring a girl. Malibu is quiet, without much to do. But, that is why you go there. Quiet and easy to get ther from Pattaya.

30 minutes? :allright Do you know how big Koh Samet is? About double that and you should be able to walk around the whole island. Personally I'd rather stay at Saikaew Beach which is on Hat Sai Kaew. Vongduen beach (Malibu) is too far for my taste as the roads are pretty messed up and not paved there so they are really made for driving. If you have a motorbike, OK, if not that is a very far walk to town. If you want to look for 500 baht, you should probably look in to Samed Cliff or Saikaew Villa. Even this is cheap to me, but at Silversand

I highly suggest you look yourself, and honestly there are very few resorts in Samet at that low of a price. Two of the one's I have listed are some of the cheaper and not even they are within a 500 THB range. You may want to stay on a different island as the popularity of this island has increased so much. So have the prices.

You will have real problems getting a room that cheap anywhere on Koh Samet unless you book well in advance as there aren't that many available that cheap. A lot of the ones that are that cheap are also out on longewr term rentals. Good luck. :D

I take that back, go here and you can see some really cheap bungalows though I'm sure they aren't all that great but for 500 THB what can you possibly complain about

http://wikitravel.org/en/Ko_Samet#Budget_2

I haven't heard of any of these resorts so you will have to google it, just like I googled 'cheap accomodations in koh samet.' :D

I have interest in the island as I am going there in a couple of months but am staying in a much more expensive price ranged hotel.
