Forget Tunney vs. Schmelling. Forget Dewey vs. Truman. Forget The Raiders. vs the Steelers and The Immaculate Reception. The greatest upset of all time was last week at Mission Hills in Phuket. The teams were Yours Truly (handicap = 7) and Jeremy (club and teaching professional) vs. Lobin (28) and Taxi (18). I shoot one under my index for a gross 78 and 36 points. My partner is a pro. And yet . . . .. .

We lose 5-and-4. :D

Dont worry mate Pieman is a bandit off 28 as you found out. He thrashes me and my mate most Thursday's at Khow kheo and thank god that Taxi was not on form as that would have made it much worse for the pair of you.

Now Jeremy is a pussy cat and I can say that safely as he never reads the boards but from what I heard it was you giving him a lesson. lol

The one thing that does need answering was the state of Mission Hills. Fantastic facilities and great service all round on what should by now be a top course but I venture to say that it has not improved one bit in the last year with boggy fairways and bald greens. Bunkers that have not seen a rake for months and clover all over the place that they are treating with salt rather than hebicides that is leaving bald patches all over.

I was very dissapointed with it and it seems like a course in lots of trouble to me. It is down to bad course management I feel as if you look at the two greens and fairways near the clubhouse they are in great condition so it can be done. Sad for what should be by now a fantastic course.

You're right about the Misson Hills; it's a beautiful layout, the facilities are impeccable and the service is absolutely first rate, but the course itself was in pretty poor condition. The fairways were patchy and thin, and the greens were so chewed up the ball bounced more then it rolled when you putted it. I saw a large group of groundskeepers spreading what my caddie told me was salt, which struck me as counterproductive; what's going to grow there when you've salted the land? Jeremy told me they'd been having a lot of problems due to the very wet year they'd had and had not been able to get a fungus under control as a result. From what I saw it definitely looked like a fungus. The bunkers, which I was generally able to avoid that day, did look to be in good condition, however.

And you're right about the 9th and 18th greens; if they can get those in good shape they can do it with the other 16.

For you to shoot just 6 over (and that after taking a double at the first) was remarkable. Given that I shot a gross 104 and Taxi was not at his best it is somewhat mystifying that you could lose. Now why was that - perhaps your partner did a little too much "shopping" the night before ?

Rumour has it that Jeremy is going to book a lesson with you next time round. :clap1

A great round though - fun all the way. Shame about the course as the facilities are outstanding but as has been said, some serious money needs to be spent on the course not just the "glitz".

Look forward to the next time.......

Cheers

Pie
