My IBM has WiFi and bluetooth built in. I always take a look to see if there are any WiFi signals available. Many are now being password protected so you won't be able to use the protected ones anyways. If there are no usable signals, I turn on my phone's bluetooth and hook up using GPRS. I use AIS 1-2 Call. It's slow but usually works OK. WiFi is great and many places offer it free to their customers. It's much faster than GPRS.

You will get a better wifi signal if you buy a usb wifi dongle. Use this regardless whether you have an in-built one.

Some web sites give instructions for a signal booster if you make a homemade satelite type dish made of a wok with a hole in the middle of it for the dongle (via a usb extension cable). I have been doing a few experiments and still havent got it exactly right but will keep u updated. You have to do a few physics calculations to obtain the optimum focusing distance of the wok!!!!!

Alternatively, use ais (1 to call) net sim in your mobile phone.(approx 750baht from ais tuk com) You can connect this to your laptop via blue tooth or the usb phone cable that came with your phone. Sony have a net connection software programme that is easy to use. Once connected you use internet as you would normally. The connection speed aint fast but its reasonable. 300baht per month for 40hours online. You must put another 300baht in each month tho. If you dont use your time up you can still carry your credit on to the next month for calls tho.

the built-in WLAN in my laptop is better than a USB attachment

yes, I have tried both

and don't use AIS for GPRS, my dTac sim has unlimited GPRS at NO extra cost

and I have tried all TrueMove, and AIS, DTAC is simply free

even for a pre-paid account

I hate to think that I partially agree with BHY :bigsmile: but the WiFi built into my IBM laptop is MUCH better than USB plug in.

I don't use the GPRS a lot but I do subscribe to AIS 1-2 Call by the month. They automatically take about 53 baht per month from my pre-paid credit for 6 hours of time. I check my email with my cell phone and when I have my laptop with me I can hook up to the Internet from anywhere in the country. Dial *138 to setup an account and buy time. There are several options available in the English language. Dial *139 to check your time balance. I think D-Tac charges the standard pre-paid phone rate for GPRS if you don't have a package. ??

I used my friends Hutch a few times when I was in Pattaya. Their coverage isn't great (no coverage up country) but it is fine in Bangkok and Pattaya. It is better than GPRS but still nothing to brag about.

"agree with BHY"

;-}

and I also agree with VidMan, if you've got some shite LapTop, then maybe the USB plug-in will work better
