" 1. There is no such thing as a "marriage visa".

2. A non immigrant O visa can be issued to visit family for up to 90 days and a multi entry type has a one year validity and can be used for unlimited entry/exit up to 90 days each stay.

3. A non immigrant visa can be extended on a yearly basis inside Thailand at an Immigration office if you are married and have a family income of 40k baht per month. I thought a non immigrant O was good for 1 year and can be renewed while in LOS (ONCE per year), provided you show 40,000 baht per month income.

N I O and multiple entry are two different visas. You need to have a N I O for 3 years B4 you can apply for residency in LOS. The post I copied seems to suggest that a NIO has to be renewed every 90 days, while in LOS, and the multiple entry once a year (but you have to go on a run every 90 days), but the NIO is more important in that I would need that visa for three years to apply for residency. The multiple entry visa does nothing ntowards applying for residency,

What if you don't live in LOS but want to get started on the "having a NIO for 3 years thing". Do you have to go to LOS every 90 days to renew NIO?

i had always thought the NIO needed to be renewed in your home country ?

or that renewing in los was very hard ...

 

from what you put does it mean if you make sure that during all your visits over 3 years you run on a NIO that a resi visa is possible to get for under 50's ?

I obviously need to register at Thaivisa and ask the same questions. I did not see a age requirement for folks married to a Thai. Just 3 years of NIO and then enter the lottery in the october following the 3 years of having NIO. I think 100 people from each/any country are picked for residency each year.

FWIW, I read if your a Thai male and marry a foreign women Thai citizenship is close to being automatic. Slightly different rules with a foreign male marring a Thai women. Almost impossible to get Thai citizenship. BTW this went up to the Thai Supreme court and they ruled there was no discrimination with this. TIT males rule and females..........................

Citizenship is a whole nother bowl of wax. That 3 year thang I'm talkin about is just for the I.D. card (resident of Thailand).

It helps with ownership of property and many other things but is not the full thing where you get a Thai passport.

My mate has been married to a Thai for 27 years, the only thing he can get in LOS is a Thai driving licence with his O visa. His wife owns the land his house is built on. Their 25 year old daughter, born in U.K has only last year, applied for a Thai passport, so that if her mum dies, the land can be passed on to her. Otherwise it goes to her Thai family.My mate would get nothing he could call his own.

Re Permanent Residency, you need to have 3 years of continuous extensions of stay to be eligible to apply. As there are minimum salary requirements for different nationalities, you need to be employed here and have a record of paying taxes on that amount. I believe I've read of figures in the amount of 80,000 baht per month as being adequate for Westerners and in some cases less than that amount would be acceptable.

 

You don't need to be married.

Clean criminal record from your home country including a fingerprint check.

Health clearance as per the old retirement visa.

A personal "portfolio" showing you to be a desirable candidate. Might include photos of your home, workplace - diplomas, degrees - letters of recco from Thais - financial statements and so on.

 

Applications are accepted only during last two weeks of Dec. of each year. Personal interviews are held in Mar and Apr. along with the Thai language test.

 

Successful candidates are notified about 16 mos. after the initial application.

 

You have to have a re-entry permit with PR status.

 

You have to have a work pemit with PR status, but the good news is Immigration is cut out of the picture, and you deal only with the Ministry of Labor.

 

You cannot own land with PR.

 

Fee on the granting of PR is around 200,000 baht or 100K if applying on the basis of marriage.

 

In 2005 no country came even close to their 100 person quota, for example:

European (UK/German etc.) = 68

North Amer (USA/Canada) = 28

Australian = 13
