I have been checking out total solar eclipses for the next 20 years. On 22 july 2009 there will be total solar eclipse that passes thru asia. As best I can tell the track of the eclipse will be thru Jiaxing china which is halfway between Hangzhou and shanghai. It will have a 6 minute duration and will be a 108 % coverage making this the most dramatic eclispe unitl 2027. A must see for your lifetime.

 

If you want to plan a trip to LOS and want a good excuse why you are traveling to asia say you are going to see eclipse in China. It should be an inexpensive side trip from BKK.

Book early if you want to go as astronomers from all over will be fighting to get the best view points. A partial eclipse will be seen from Thailand, if I understand the graphics correctly. 108% coverage suggests that the Moon will be close to its closest point to the Earth during the eclipse.
