Having been to Pattaya, Phucat and Malaysia over the last few years decided to take a month's holiday in Vietnam.

Would appreciate any advice members can give on this alternative to Pattaya.

Thanks

Rick

My advice, find a different place to visit unless you have a very specific reason to go. The government has focussed on unlawful activities there, the resorts are VERY nice unless you have a nose... Many of the resorts are close to where the sewer outfalls from the towns are located. There are opportunities to go diving off shore but the equipment is suspect. Of course, it is hot and humid, and worse during monsoon. There are few museums and those document the "American War". THe airport at Saigon is very old and just added runway/taxiway signage but traffic control is still by "Follow Me" cars.

There is one 4-lane highway (From Saigon to Bangkok via Cambodia). THere are 80 Million people in Vietnam from 44 different tribes. THere are only 300,000 cars in the entire country, everyone else gets around on a motorscooter. You do NOT want to rent one, you have no clue how to drive in this traffic. Over 25 people die every day in Saigon in accidents. Green lights mean go, red means go faster.

Have fun!

I must have went to a different airport from you.I flew out of Saigon last month and I found the airport very nice, not big but nice restaurant and bar and nice duty free.I agree about the motorbikes,I don't know how they do it.

I wouldn't go so far as to say"find a different place to visit".I'm in Vung Tau at the moment with about 85 other guys and we all seem to be having a great time, granted ...I have heard stories of falangs being set up by the police but these stories are few and far between.

All in all I haven't had any problems or smelled bad smells in VungTau,can't comment on Saigon itself as I haven't been there(only the airport).

Just my opinion of course.

  • 2 weeks later...

After a month travelling north to south: - Trust no-one, ask the price of everything, TWICE, count your change every time.

P4P very difficult to find outside Saigon/vung tau. Most hotels are not guest friendly and prostitution is really frowned on. Great scenery, very clean but the hawkers/scammers really get you down after a while. loved the country but the people drove me insane.
