Indeed. There is a major difference between TexMex, CalMex, and authentic Mexican food. Personally, I love the taquerias in San Diego and San Francisco.

Hey, don't forget L.A. Seriously, I think East L.A. is a step above San Francisco's Mission District. And aren't restaurants like Chevy's, La Salsa and Baja Fresh an abomination When I get sick of my current job, I will be opening up a Mexican restaurant in Pattaya. I am convinced the Thais will like some Mexican food, because dishes like chile verde or carnitas, if served on rice, will appeal to the Thais. (I have served these to my TG, and she likes them). 2guns

Shooters on Soi Diamond has a Mexican menu that is pretty good. To date I have had the soft shell taco and the chicken burrito both good. The salsa and pico de gallo are very good. I think they serve till 1 or 2 am.

The food from Shooter's is catered by Bob's BBQ, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm biased, but I try to forget about LA whenever I can. :banghead

Shooter's food, Mexican and otherwise, is operated by Sam. Bob's Burgers is a wholly separate business, not associated with Shooters.

The carne asada quesadilla at Shooters is one of my favorite evening meals.

Bob's BBQ has not been with Shooters for some time now. Sam is the one who brought Mexican food to Bob's menu. Sam has had Mexican Restaurants in both California and Texas (I think).

Sorry Ed not true we had mexican food in our express locations at both TQ2, Lennies, and shooters before Sam come along. He added and expanded on our existing menu. Our menu in the restaurant is totally new and different from Sam's. Sam's has great food as you have said.

There use to be a place down on Mission and 24th street.....Dos Guitarres.

Simple family operation.....have to admit they said they changed their style because of the cheese, and sour cream thing in California and the chilies also were different.

Miguel's in Reno, Nevada also the same thing, they changed their style to suit white folks.

I don't see a big issue with the guys in Pattaya putting out Mexican......after a few Margaritas.....with a few mamasitas......it usually turns out a fine "turd".......the next day.....

If you really stick to the purist thingie, then you will be somewhat dissapointed.....

I heard the guy at Bob's BBQ, is the real deal "gringo"......and pays attention to the Tex Mex stuff.....but why not create Thai-Mex......a fusion of avalable food with a Mex groove....

I liked Taqueria Cancun: there were two, at each end of the Mission District, and one on Market. They serve awesome tacos al pastor. I haven't been there in about 2 years. How I long for authentic taqueria-style Mexican food, which does not exist in LOS.

I find all the Mexican places in town are a little different in taste or style. I think you can find good in all of them.

We also offer a fair menu of Mexican Nosh at good prices.

East LA.......Are you kidding?

You need a pass from the "Cribs" just to drive thru that place......I wouldn't go near that place at night......

Still it's very subjective, I wouldn't say that LA is better, I hear that San Diego puts out some good Mex too......

In any case, you need to get upscale Thais in there to make it a go.

I have eaten at Tequila Cantina, Blue Parrot, and Mike's and none of them can compare to the Mexican restaurants in San Diego. That's ok, you can't get a good steak or even a hamburger in Pattaya either. It's Thailand - we don't go there to eat! :)

Being American I really enjoy Tequila Cantina because it is full of my countrymen, they show NFL games on the tube, and they have several cute waitresses who are quite friendly. A great starting point for the fun experience known as Soi 7-8!!

That's not true at all.

For many of us, dining is one the big draws (in addition to other things). The Thai food I enjoy in Bangkok or Pattaya is not like the Thai food I enjoy at home.

Maybe it's a silly pursuit, trying to figure out who has the "best" Mexican food. We all seem to have out own ideas and the food can vary from region to region.

I've lived in San Diego, Phoenix, and Texas, and have tried my fair share of Mexican restaurants. I've also spent some time in Mexico.

My experience: the "worst" Mexican food was in Mexico. Texas seems to have it's own thing going. I've had some great Mexican food in Phoenix and San Diego, but then again, that's just my opinion.

Southwestern cuisine has a lot going for it. One of the best restaurants has to be Mark Miller's Coyote Cafe' in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Miller was trained by Alice Waters of Chez Pannise in Berkeley, and opened his first restaurant, Fourth Street Grill, in Berkeley in 1979. In 1984, he sold out and opened Coyote Cafe in Santa Fe in 1987.

The best authentic Mexican food I have eaten has been in Los Angeles, not Mexico.

It's hard to say which city is best. Also, are you talking about taqueria-style, family style or southwestern cuisine restaurants. I think you now need to throw Vegas into the mix, because it has a large Mexican-American population. In Vegas, there's a fantastic taqueria on Maryland Pkwy, just north of E. Sahara, called Santa Rosa Taco Shop. I can't say that any one restaurant in San Diego is the "best" Mexican.

Where can I find of a good mexican restaurant?

I'm in Merida for 3 more weeks before I move to Jomtien in Sep.There are several good restaurants here.

:moon

All kidding aside,I'll need a Mexfix every week after I move.

Unlike others here, I do, in fact, claim to be an expert in Mexican food. Haha... J/K.... :D

Although I do live in an area with probably the highest concentration of taquerias in the entire USA - no kidding! Plenty of sit down Mex places too.

I've been to Tequila Reef quite a few times because I usually stay right around the corner from there. It's decent. I like the pork nachos a lot. My Thai friend turned her nose up at them when they arrived but then after trying a few she pulled out her little notebook and asked me the official name for them.

Overall the food at Tequila Reef is pretty decent. True, it may not be the most authentic but at least they have the salsa, beans, cheese, and meat thing down. The margaritas are tasty too. :drunk

I've had really bad Mexican food in the UK and Europe - you wouldn't believe how bad. Salsa tasting like ketchup, soggy chips, etc. They truly know how to F-up this kind of food.

If you've been to Mexico you will know that the most common dish to the majority of Mexicans is simply a couple corn tortillas with some meat, chopped onions, and cilantro. A far cry from the Tex-Mex and the giant burritos known as "authentic Mexican food" by most people.

If you want BAD nachos, visit the Hard Rock near Narita. They START at USD 17.50 and add USD 2 for guacamole.Wasn't enough for 1 person.along with the $5 soda and iced tea or $8 beer,I was disappointed.

Ya beat me to it Bob. Your Mexican food is very good!

I hope the Mexican is better than the burgers.I had a very average burger during my 1 visit to Bob's in June.

Maybe I'll try the ribs when I move to Jomtien in Sep. YMMV

I'd say the Blue Parrot on Soi Pattaya Playland 2 and Barbarque Bob's On Soi LK Metro would have my vote!

Also, Beef Eaters (in the little plaza on 2nd Rd., across from Mike Mall, behind Kiss Foods) does a nice little all you can eat Mexican Brunch on Saturday's and Sunday's from Noon to 4:00pm (I think that's the hours???) which is a good deal for 199 Baht, and the selection isn't bad either.

I've been to Tequila Reef a couple of times and it always seemed to be hit and miss...........for me at least.
