where to go for FAST, reliable internet and good price

Recommended Posts

I have stayed at several places now and none of them have satisfactory internet in the room. Either it goes up and down like a yo-yo or it is miserably slow. I trade the stock market and need a dependable connection that is fast enough to handle my orders. I practically live on the internet so I need the connection in the room, not the lobby or internet cafe down the street. Being a cheap charlie, I also don't want to spend more than 15k baht per month. Can stay for 6 months or more if it reduces the rate. Any suggestions?

Here we go again. Guy asks a question................................

Sky-Top has in room wired internet connection. I used it last May and found it to be OK. Speed was not as fast as my broadband connection at home put it was fast enough. I'd consider the reliability to be good but when the IP provider goes down well TIT. Outages seem to be short lived but when it would go down, I'd go off and do something else.

Sky-Top is a small clean guest house located on 2nd Road near soi 6. It offers AC, fridge, cable TV and in room safe plus the wired internet. On site laundry with same day service. In room internet is free. Ethernet cable is provided and it's long.. Price goes from $14USD per night and up. I think it's good value for the baht. Long term discounts are available.

I edited the month I stayed at Sky-Top from December to May. I used my laptop last December but I don't remember what connection I used. It could have been wi-fi or ethernet. When I returned in May it was definitely ethernet.

When I done a review of the Sky-Top a couple of months back, I asked about the internet connection because a couple of guys had said on this forum that it had wi-fi installed but I couldn't see any evidence of any routers in place. When I questioned the owner's partner she pointed me towards a standard telephone connection located next to the bed. It certainly wasn't a LAN connection and there was no LAN cable provided or available. I was also led to understand that it was a 512 kb connection shared between the guesthouse rooms and the internet cafe downstairs. Neither the internet cafe or guesthouse sections of the skytop website make any mention of internet facilities, LAN or wi-fi, being available in the rooms.

This is what I wrote at the time ............................

In-room internet access (7)

I saw no evidence whatsoever of wi-fi cabling or routers at SkyTop. When I asked about connecting to the internet from the room I was advised to connect my laptop to the redundant telephone socket next to the bed. However, there is an internet café within the premises that offers one hour’s free net access to guests. Seaside has wi-fi routers cabled in to the 1st and 3rd floors. I was able to obtain a good signal/connection on the 3rd floor but the manager advised that the signal is not so strong on the 2nd floor. The wi-fi at Seaside is free to guests.

Score (7) – Skytop 3, Seaside 6

Perhaps BigD could update us on exactly what connections and speeds are available when he visits in 11 days time.

I used a ethernet cable supplied by Sky-Top and the speed was way faster then 56K dial up but slower then the ADSL service I have at home.

Perhaps you can let us know the download speeds you get in the rooms when you're next in town. It would be good info for any boardie who has internet access near the top of his list of priorities.

I must say that it is commendable that the owner of the skytop has installed a lan system in the rooms. I'm surprised though that he doesn't advertise it ............... not many guesthouses in Pattaya can boast in-room LAN connections.

Does the hotel offer a weekly/monthly unlimited access package for guests? Their advertised rate of 1 baht/min is a bit expensive if you are there for more than a few days and are spending a fair amount of time online.

I'm sure many people, including the owner, have said it's 1 hr a day free internet for guests. Perhaps that's just in the cafe.

I'm surprised the owner doesn't advertise it more (nor anyone else for that matter) .......... it would be a major plus for anyone to have free, high-speed, unlimited internet access via LAN included in their room. Certainly a bigger seller than non-slip bathroom tiles.

I don't doubt you. (Well, no more than I doubted your claims about double-insulated electrical switches in the bathroom). Just making the point that it would seem to be a bigger selling point than "non-slip tiles" in the bathroom.

I recall that in Feb/Mar time a boardie (jackcorbett (?)) mentioned that the guesthouse was going to have a new internet system installed (1 gb download speeds no less

Speaking of which, I just talked to Pete's gf who helps him out a huge amount running Sky-Top. She told me just two days ago that she lined up new Internet service for Sky-Top that's rated at 1 gigabyte download.

You even said in March that wifi had been installed .............

My favorite guest house has recently installed in room wi fi makes it even easier to check in.

Can't understand why they installed wi-fi when they had a LAN and then immediately ripped it out and went back to their LAN.

Interesting you go back through my post's, Jack Corbett and God only knows who else in regards to Sky-Top.

I stayed at Sky-Top last May and the room I was in had hard wired in room internet. I was told by the owner, he installed wi-fi. Beats the hell out of me why it was removed and since I'm a customer not a partner, owner. I could care less why it was removed. I would suspect they experienced signal strength problems that the owner was unable to resolve.

You said in your first post that the LAN was installed last December. It was not. Neither was wi-fi installed in March. Just another couple of examples of your lies about the place. No we have to believe you that the owner has wired the rooms on a LAN. I shouldn't have to point out but your stories change according to whatever way the wind is blowing. Please try to make up your mind.

I would suggest to the OP thjat being as his livelyhood seems to depend on connection speed etc, that he physically visits this 6 star de-luxe accomodation and see for himself!

Absolutely no need to pre-book as I.m sure it will be at least half empty all year round!

I use my lap top in a number of hotel rooms, cruise ships, airline clubs, etc and I may have confused what connection I used in Sky-top last December because of all the different places I travel to. I can state that last May my room at Sky-Top was hard wired ethernet connection. I edited my OP to reflect the change from December to my stay in May.

Don't worry, BigD. I'm always happy to remind you.
