Actually, we fought you guys twice and won. Okay, we had a bit of help from the French at the end of the first match.

But the point of the poll was not to win or lose, it was merely to put paid to the incorrect claims that this is a predominantly American board.

The poll and other sources of information disprove that claim, which is usually put forth by those that have a national whinging trait in their gene pool.

How can you bundle North and South America together, or all of the mainland European countries? I guess geography was not one of your better subjects, when you went to school. Putting Australia and the Kiwis in the same group is an absolute insult. :chogdee

Because I didn't want to have too many categories.

Would you care to do next year's poll?

Don't get upset, my old friend. Your poll was not that important and there is no need to do another one, in my opinion. :chogdee

Well thats not a first, only battle they took on their own was Vietnam, and we all know what happened there, don't we ^_^

I am from the USA and currently living in Washington State. Actually Jamie, England did play a small part in the Vietnam War and had 22 British soldiers lose their lives.

What a sad loss of 22 British soldiers in an absolutely unnecessary conflict, such a long time ago. ^_^

Whoa such an arrogant person. Deny geography and then deny history. My old friend indeed.

My dear friend, buy yourself a good atlas and do a poll on the rights and wrongs of the Vietnam war. ^_^

Scandinavia is left out from the poll. :thumbup

Cheers. How is the weather now in Sweden compared to Pattaya? I worked in a paper factory in Lilla Edet, north of Göteborg, a very long time ago.

I have tried to tell MM, our guru, his poll is arse-up. He just will not listen. :hairout

In defense of Martin. It is probably difficult for an American to understand the regional ' conflicts' in other parts of the world.

Had he been a Brit, with our 4 different countries, or an Aus' or Kiwi. with their competitive natures, perhaps he could better understand the strong regional instincts and 'conflicts.'

Brits will post as English, Scots......

America and Canada perhaps are his best guide. ( I know how Geed Canadians get, if called American )

Even the Barmy Army flags at the cricket are seldom a plain St Georges cross. Most have the club- town- county- or pub the people with them, are from. Just being English is not enough for them. :thumbup It is the national equivalent of the

" Hello Mum " banners you sometimes see. :crying:

Anyway 225 BM's only reflects the posters. It doesn't geographically reflect the overall members of the board. There again, it is the posters that make me think this is an American board with British Guests. Where would the friendly transatlantic banter come from without us ? :hairout

One general definition of "Continental Europe" is the European landmass excluding the UK, Ireland and Iceland. Two other island nations excluded from Continental Europe are Malta and the Republic of Cyprus. However, in other areas of Europe there are differing ideas as to how the term should be defined.

Apologies to anyone from Iceland, though:

Iceland is actually located in the North Atlantic Ocean and so not on a continent. However, it is considered part of the continent Europe.

No, it likely reflects the voters. There might be some who don't post who do vote.

If you look here, you'll see (at this moment) that of the top 10 posters in this particular thread, 8 were non-Americans.

How much of an overwhelming majority do you need before you feel at home?

After another counting, of the top 20 posters in this thread (at present), 3 are North Americans.

MM, mate, what is your take on Greenland then? Being an autonomous country for some time, does it still belong to Denmark and mainland Europe? Apologies to the many posters from Greenland. I am not trying to cause confusion on this important issue. :thumbup

Greenland, the world's largest island, is about 81% ice capped. Vikings reached the island in the 10th century from Iceland; Danish colonization began in the 18th century, and Greenland was made an integral part of Denmark in 1953. It joined the European Community (now the EU) with Denmark in 1973 but withdrew in 1985 over a dispute centered on stringent fishing quotas. Greenland was granted self-government in 1979 by the Danish parliament; the law went into effect the following year. Greenland voted in favor of increased self-rule in November 2008 and acquired greater responsibility for internal affairs in June 2009. Denmark, however, continues to exercise control of Greenland's foreign affairs, security, and financial policy in consultation with Greenland's Home Rule Government.

According to your map, Greenland is geographically North American, but was stolen by the Vikings. :chogdee

What's your point? There are several places in the Americas that are still governed by European nations. Breaking news...Woo hoo.

To put it another way- Left to the Americans, this thread would be pretty quiet. :chogdee

Once an American has voted - his job is done.

It is those who feel they are not able to register their homeland, due to lumping together, that are qualifying their vote by stating their country with a post.

That is why there are so few American posts on this thread- but you knew that didn't you ? :grin-jump
