Any members have any experience with shipping a container from America to Thailand? my wife is Thai and we are planning on moving back to Thailand next year. She is wanting to ship a 20' container with some personal items back home. Anybody know the process and cost involved with something like this? Thanks for the help!

I looked into it once. It's easy to get quotes online. The bigger problem is Thai customs. You need to pay off those guys.

 

Anyway, a 20" container shouldn't cost too much from a US port to Bangkok. Maybe 2500 dollars?

That's what I was kinda thinking. I've been told that if the container arrives in Thailand under her name and as she's Thai, the custom fee's are pretty low. They told us to tell customs that she has been living abroad and now returning home to live and these are her personal items. It would also depart from Los Angeles, Ca.

You're right, but it's tougher than you describe. What you need is to hire an agent who will take care of the extras. If you try to do it yourself, you may shoot yourself just to stop the pain. It is a terrible ordeal. But there are good agents all over the port area, and all over the yellow pages, who will fix you up fine. They know the ropes, know the paperwork (which is very depressing) and know the right people.

 

captcraig, you'll almost certainly get buy without paying (hardly) any duties, as you say - personal items. That's not to mention the cough service fees cough.
