Thailand living.

In February will be arriving in Pattaya. Having second thoughts about finances. What I have read on this forum and others is that 40,000baht is not enough to comfortably live on in Pattaya. If this is true, where in Thailand, which is not polluted, can I live with this amount? I am a just divorced guy who has alimony payments, only leaves me with this amount. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

40K/Month works out to about 1300 Baht per day.  You would have to have a pretty frugal life style to get by on that.  When I vacation in Pattaya I plan for US$ 125-150 per day (5000-6000 Baht per day).  Of course it will be somewhat different if you live there as opposed to visiting for 3-4 weeks.  good luck

Do some research on Nong Khai.  Last year AARP listed it as one of the most desirable places to retire outside of the USA.  You could  get by in Pattaya on 40K/month, but you wouldn't be hitting the go-gos or bars very often.  Your money would certainly go farther than here.

remember when you are living in Pattaya it will be a lot different from holidaying there, when on holiday you will try to get as much out of your time as you can and probably will not really care what you spend as long as your are having fun.

 

When you are living here you will find out where to get the best deals etc, you may stay in some nights and what a dvd, you will eat more rice less steak etc. you will have more time to relax and do things at a better pace.

 

It will all depend on the lifestyle you want to lead, compare it to your life at home now, do you go to discos every night, eat our every night?

 

You will be surprised how far you can make your 40k go.

You can exist on 40K, and can meet your basics needs. Food and clothing cost are reasonable, and you can  find reasonable housing in most any city. Nong Kai is said to be a good city to retire.  I have been there several times, but not long enough to form an opinion.  You may want to check out Nong Kai's on the web, the baker has a good web site.

 

With income of 40,000 a month you are not eligible for a retirement visa.  If you are on a tourist visa you are

suppost to leave country to update your visa atleast every 90 days.  What about medical, will you have insurance? P U S S Y ?????????

 

There are alot of considerations.

 

It cost me 60,000 to 80,000 to live well in BKK.

I spent a few days in Nong Khai last year checking it out as a retirement spot. The advantages are that it is cheap; the climate is good; crime rate is low; it is close to Laos for a visa run (there and back in 2 hours) and has some prospects as a pretty town on the Mekhong close to where the annual Naga fireball phenomenon takes place. However by Pattaya standards it is dull and a long way from Bangkok.

Yes, YOU can live 'reasonably' well on 40kB/month--I know two guys (Americans) that have both been doing it for years.

 

No, they don't play golf daily, hit the go-gos nightly, etc., but do lead happy lives.

 

Both guys pay around 5kB for housing--walk or take the baht bus everywhere--and eat at cheap hotel buffets like the Apex (95B).

 

Bottom line--You WILL find  NO place better, in the world, for that amount of money.

Yeah,on 40000 baht per month you would probably have a similar lifestyle to home.Maybe one mega night each week and a couple of nights cheapish restaurants and a few beers.

But forget the a go-go and massage places every night.

It would be financially impossible.....but living permanently here would be a lot different than holiday...you would have to slow down a bit or be dead in six months !

Depends what you want....Pattaya has climate,cheap food,cinemas,expat clubs.....its the horizontal exercise that bites deep into your wallet !

Incidentally,I've been looking on the net at Nong Khai...cheap accomodation,niceish place,good for visa runs but hows about Udon Thani ? You can rent a 3 bedroomed detached bungalow for about 5500 baht per month and it does seem to have a reasonable nightlife....an ex American Vietnam war place.

You can live on 40k IMHO. Once you suss out Pattaya you'll know the best restaurants for cheap food and which bars do happy hours and at what time of day. If you're staying long term then you can get a good deal on a studio flat or even just a room. The TGs are the ones that put a strain on your wallet but you should still be able to squeeze in a few short times each week  ;D

Plus, when it's low season and there a few farangs about you'll find TGs at a very reasonable rate too  

 

You may not be able to live a playboy lifestyle but you will survive no problem I'm sure.

1 Yr Visa was USD $150 2002.

Appartment in P.P USD $125 per month.

Elect ect USD $50.

Forget food, add USD $50 a month for cleaner/cook/shopping.

Forget beer, drink black market Johnny Walker at USD $5 a litre.

Pussy at USD $ 3 short time.

 

Hell,  buy a half share in a bar or restuarant at USD $3000

and watch your expenditure on booze and pussy drop.
