I look forward to relocating to Pattaya in the next year and would like to get info about being able to get American satellite television such as Direct TV or The Dish Network. I would like to get all American sports football, basketball, baseball ect. Are there any bars in Pattaya or even Bangkok that anyone knows of that have Direct TV or the Dish Network?

Thanks

Sorry, but you can not get american satellite networks in Thailand.  The curvature of the earth kills it.

You can get UBC, which is a Thai satellite service with lots of english chanells, including ESPN.  There is some American football coverage but not a lot.

Hi Pete

Any idea how much a decent satelite TV outfit is likely to cost me?

1350 baht a month for the gold package which is all channels excluding the Japanese ones.

I forget what the installation was but I think around 5,000 baht, maybe a bit cheaper.  They sell you the dish (you can't rent them) so if you ever move you can take it with you.

Thanks for your help once again Pete.

Comast and a few other larger companies are adding several satellites this year. They claim that once they are all operation that they will have relayed coverage around the world. So things could change over the next 12 to 18 months.

If you can find a friend with the technical know-how (or is willing to learn) you could have him set up a Tivo in the states, put it on line and then you could download programs in Thailand and burn them onto DVD's (or watch them on your computer).   You could set it up so that you could even program the Tivo from Thailand.

I'm thinkng of setting this up sometime this fall so that my brother can get U.S. TV in Kuala Lumpur.  If I end up doing so I'll post how it worked out.

What about cost for using the phone line, at 56K the download time would be very long right? I would think that it would wind up costing to much to be worth while?

FT,

Lost track of this thread for a few days...

No idea on the cost of using the phone line.  It would be a local call to your ISP.  My guess though is that you would want DSL and even the DSL in LOS might not be fast enough to download say a 3 hour football game over night.

I would bet there are a lot of guys who would pay 1000 baht for a football game though!
