Re: Bangkokians told to brace for floods, Bangkok

Tourists warned to avoid Thailand's flood zones

Plus, an update on those opportunistic crocodiles that escaped from a Pattaya zoo

16 September, 2011

As flooding continues to wreak havoc in Thailand, tourists are being warned to stay away from the country’s worst-hit areas and avoid activities like white-water rafting and visits to waterfalls.

Thaitravelblogs.com posted a statement from Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) stating that flash floods and landslide warnings have been issued for 12 provinces: Satun, Trang, Songkhla, Krabi, Chumphon, Chanthaburi, Trat, Phetchabun, Phitsanulok, Uttaradit, Nan, and Mae Hong Son.

“For tourist safety, access to waterfalls and white-water rafting in flood-prone areas has been temporarily suspended,” TAT warned.

Meanwhile, Bangkok has been warned to brace for floods around the Chao Phraya River as runoff water is expected to reach the city by early next week. For more on local conditions, tourists can call the TAT Information Line at 1672.

In related news, the floods brought short-lived freedom to an unknown number of opportunistic Pattaya crocodiles. The reptiles reportedly made a break for it when heavy flooding caused the soil to erode near their pool, creating a hole under the wall at the Million Year Stone Park.

According to the Bangkok Post, hunters had caught at least 29 of the escaped reptiles as of Thursday, many of them four to five meters in length. No word on how many crocs are still at large, though the farm says it will pay 5,000 baht to people who provide information leading to each capture.
