Has anyone had a gold crown fitted in Thailand? I was given a quote by my dentist today to have my two front teeth crowned. Basically it's going to cost me £400 for a standard crown and approximately £650 for a gold crown. Now we've all heard the rumours that dental treatment is cheaper in Thailand, but is it true? How much would it cost me in Thailand? I'm thinking I would be better off waiting until the next time I'm in Thailand to have the work done.

Obviously Thai gold would be too soft to use for a crown so they would have to use something more like English gold, mixed with metal. Can they do this? I can't say I have ever seen a Thai with a gold crown.

Of course they won't use Thai gold, like everywhere in the world they will use a gold alloy, although I can see that most Thai dentist will use a low-gold alloy since its cheaper but atill looks "golden". With gold prices so high I would go for a zirconium crown instead, they are even cheaper than gold crowns now, last as long and do look nicer.

The German dental clinic und Thappraya Road is the one I would recommend, I know the German owner and all of his dentists and techinicians are well trained and the quality is of a high standard as they also do lots of export work for Swiss and German dentists.

I think that dental treatment in the tourist resorts is significantly more expensive than in the rest of the country. I don't know your travel plans, but if you are in, or near, a city that hosts a university Faculty of Dentistry and associated Dental Hospital, you'll normally find a load of private dental clinics nearby (Chulalongkorn in BKK, Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai and Hat Yai are the four major locations that spring to mind). The Dental Hospitals themselves can be used by farangs and provide the same treatment by the same doctors at a fraction of the price found elsewhere.
