Sickening Accident

Recommended Posts

I was pulled up at the lights on Pratnamak turning right onto Thrappaya. To my right was a MB taxi with a falang and a Thai girl 3 up. I thought the Thai girl was getting off the bike. Her left leg went straight an touched the ground and she seemed to be pivoting off the bike.

She was having a seizure. Fell backwards and her head with no helmut e hit the road. I'm not sure if it cracked her skull or not but I would not be surprised. It was a sickening sound. Limbs stiff and shaking with her eyes rolled back in her head. The MB taxi guy called out to the MB taxi guys just up from the intersection to come and help.

I carried on with my travels as I don't think I would be any help. I hope she recovers. Moral of the story, even a 200฿ helmut would have made a huge difference.

Surprised I got no responses or other experiences. I'm still quite shocked. I have been thinking how I could have maybe helped. Only thing I have come up with is maybe I should have shot off to 7/11 and got some bags of ice to sit the back of her head on where it impacted the road. I have a terrible feeling that the poor girl has passed away.

Well, one thing I will say is that it is very rare to see a MB taxi with two passengers, both with helmets. They seldom, if ever, carry two extra helmets, so it's no surprise she wasn't wearing one.

As to falling off the bike and hitting her head, I imagine that happens more than a few times a day, especially with drunken passengers and even more so with two drunken passengers riding two up.

I also hope she is okay and only has a bump.

I think many of us have seen M/C accidents, or the results of them, and most certainly near misses.

Maybe we get hardened to them.

Didn't a man die a while back as he was hanging off the back of a baht bus and lost his grip, cracking his skull on Beach Rd?

A girl prone to seizures would have been safer in the middle, but don't expect a M/C taxi to carry 3 helmets, the passenger one he has is the cheapest available! For adults, riding 3 up is dumb.

I think she would have had more than a bump. It looked like she may have felt the seizure coming and tried to get off the bike. Her left leg was stiff and acted as a pivot. She toppled and turned, landing the worst possible way with the back of her head impacting the road. Iwas thinking cracked skull or at least brain swelling that would cause major problems.

If she was prone to seizures you would think she would have requested a helmut.

A number of the clients I deal with have ongoing medical conditions. I have investigated a few injuries due to seizure activity. You would be amazed at how resistant to injury the body is. I have seen some pretty serious falls with only minor injuries. The seizure matching your description is of the Grand Mal variety. Very good odds she recovered with quite a headache but few major injuries.
