I was trying to use one of the ATMs at the top of the moving walkway in the Big C on Sukhumvit. It was a card on a US bank, and the machine didn't like the amount I was trying to get so I pushed the button for cancel. The screen goes back to the display for an entirely new transaction. I wait several more seconds and no card, so I figure the fickle finger of fate just got me and I go on into the store. Maybe 10 meters along, I hear what sounds like a youngster running. I turn around and it's a 12 year old Thai girl with a beatific smile and my card. Gave her what was probably my most sincere wai in a very long time.

One time outside one of the malls in Pattaya I was trying to use the ATM machine with a card from an American bank. I put the card in and the machine ate it but then did nothing. So there I was with no money and no card. I didn't know what to do, so I just stood there. After what seemed like 10 or 15 minutes, the machine finally gave back my card. Weird. Next trip I opened a Thai bank account.
