Hey!

I'm getting really tired of flying economy on long haul flights. The only problem is that business class tickets are so damn expensive. Do you guys have any tips for finding discounted business class fares?

I too just booked myself on Eva from SFO to BKK for early March travel for around $900 RT in the Deluxe Class. Since I am quite tall I find that economy (cattle) class is very uncomfortable, particularly long trips like this one. Never flown this but from what I heard, bigger seats and better food.

Cheers!

Ray,

Eva economy £354 with Travelmood, £372 with Airline Network one-way, incl taxes.  For Evergreen Deluxe add approx £80 incl tax.

Other options departing 21 or 22 April are:

BA/Qantas - £320 Travelbag or Travelmood

Emirates - £320 Travelbag

Qatar - £262 Airline Network

Swiss - £341 Travelbag

Austrian - £361 Travelbag

All prices are incl tax, available and bookable on-line.

Seats can go quickly and, unlike holidays, tend not to get any cheaper the longer you hang around.

Regards,

Tom

Thanks Tom and Starry.

Tom that is a good list. Qatar looks cheap, what is the cons there?  Maybe a silly question to you but what is Travelbag, Travelmood, and Airline Network i.e. what am I buying here. Only ever heard of Economy, Business (Club) and First classes, oh and the Evergreen Deluxe from EVA of course  I have only ever used Economy and Business/Club class when work pays, but always nice to learn of more options.

Ray,

They are the three main UK travel agents dealing in flight only who have an online booking function.  Pick up any of the quality Sunday press and you will see them all advertised in the travel sections together with Trailfinders which is the other main player but does not have an online booking function.  (There is also ebookers but the booking centre is actually located in Delhi)  Alternatively, run a search in Google and the sites will come up.  With the demise of Garuda from UK the only three airlines I am aware of that offer Premium economy are EVA, BA and SAS - the airline that is, not the roughie toughie gentlemen from Hereford.

The only con with Qatar is that it stops in Doha - nothing at all wrong with the flights themselves (all pretty new Airbus).  I've only heard good reports from people who have actually used them.

Regards,

Tom

Thanks Tom so they are agents not obscure classes of travel, duh trust me to get that wrong, what a senile old git I am  ::)

Okay certainly browse many internet flight ticket outlets but not looked at those you mention so will do.  I wnated to get the OA visa sorted first then I will book the flight so will liekly book lin mid to late February for a late April flight.  Or do you advise against waiting till then and think I should set my date and book my flight now  ???

Ray,

I don't think Travelbag etc advertise in the Sunday Sport! :P

If I was in your position I would book my flight as early as you deem it is safe to do so.  In my opinion it has never been as difficult to get the exact flight that you are after from UK.  Maybe just my experience always chasing the EVA flights but lately I have found myself booking my flights earlier and earlier in order to ensure I travel on my exact dates.  What we need is a little war to generate some availability again! :-/

Hope all your other plans are coming along fine.....

Regards,

Tom

Try checking out upgrades using miles...Seem the United, and other will likely follow, is giving the early bonus of 2X miles plus any bonus you get from their program......

Up 3X miles for higher level of Mileage Plus...That will equate to more miles than your upgrade so off you go for a free business class seat nex time!

Check out those programs!!!

RayW,

I would think twice before I booked Qatar Air for April. I think I heard somewhere's that the US Air Force has big plans for that part of the world next April.  :P :o :o  10 days but whose counting.

Yep indeed BigDUSA, that is well in my mind.  I am not a worrier by nature so it would not put me off flying Quatar as  I am sure they would detour their flights away from any war areas.  Still that is IF a war takes place (and I personally dont think it will) and even if it does I reckon it would be over within a couple of weeks and well before end of April.

I would worry only if I could NOT get a flight to BKK from LHR but if there is a middle east war then the costs of flights could be even cheaper or many cancellations available.  But hey man I would rather pay the normal fair as I do not want to see any war, too many innocent people die or have their lives ruined.

RayW,

I think booking with Qatar might be a trifle optimistic.  It is generally reported that Qatar (Doha) will be one of the US hubs in any conflict with Nassar Hussein. :-/  Why else would they need a 3 mile long runway?  Probably better to play safe and book one of the European or Asian carriers that can take a more northerly routing.

How's the visa coming along?

Regards,

Tom

Hi Tom

Yep that may be wise not using Qatar, I must have a direct flight also as my nephew who is coming with me and staying for two weeks is a very nervous passenger, it is a phobia he has.  It is hard for him to get on a plane but once on he is okay so he only wants to get on and get off at the far end.  He also hates not being able to smoke for about 12 hours (poor addicted sod he is, what hope has he got  ;D  )

As to the visa well I have the police record letter and can get the doctors certificate within a couple of days BUT the OA visa has to be validated (i.e. used by entering the kingdom) within 3 months of issue.  So I intend to get it in mid February and it should not be a problem by all accounts.   :) :)

Still cannot confirm my date when I will be able to get away but again will know this within the next week or two and will then book the flights (for me and my nephew and his friend).  Those two want to fly Economy to keep the cost down so although I fancy the EVA evergreen class I will not be that anti- social.

Now to get the Hep B jabs and the Vasectomy.  Will also contact Pickfords in about two weeks time.  Very busy sorting out all my personal effects, what a big big job that is going to be.  At least it should keep the dustmen fit ;D
