can anyone tell me if I would be heading into trouble if I got a single fare flight into Bangkok?

Its my intention to stay in LOS long time when I next get to go there, why spend on a return when I dont need to?

Alright Garty,

There's a few conflicting stories doing the rounds as regards to flying in to L.O.S. on a single ticket.A good mate of mine turned up at Manchester airport(two years ago) with a single ticket to Bangkok on Air France and at the check in desk he was quizzed about his return ticket, to cut a long story short he was told that he had  to buy the return part of the flight at an extortionate price from the Air France desk or he wouldn't be allowed to board the outward flight.  :-[.On the upside this ticket was 'open' and therefore he could cash it in or use it within a year. The reason given by air France on why he couldn't board the flight on a 'single'was that when arriving at your final destination if you are refused entry you are the responsibility of the airline bringing you in.Hence they'd have to fly you back out of the country. :-[On the other hand i've flown in on a'single' before from Sri lanka Hong Kong and The Philippines and had no problems, this was ten years ago so times do change. The general feeling is that it almost certainly depends on the airline you are flying with(double check before you book) and it also depends on the immigration official who stamps you in in BKK.In my experience the Immigration officer at the airport has never asked me to show my onward flight so i'd say it's a very slim chance that the 'Thais' would refuse you entry on a one way ticket.

Garty,

You are allowed to enter Thailand for a period of 30 days without a visa.  It is a condition that you have a fully paid ticket to exit the kingdom within this period.  The airlines can be held responsible for returning you to your point of embarkation if you do not satisfy that criteria.  If you are going to stay longer than 30 days I assume that you intend to do so without a visa.  If that is the case then you start to get into all sorts of different scenarios.  I would think that it is probably cheaper and less hassle in the long run just to play by the rules in the first place.

You will be okay if you get a tourist visa prior to entering Thailand. This is from the UK Thai Embassy web site:-

"It is worth noting that British, Irish and South African nationals are entitled to enter and stay as tourists in the kingdom for less than 30 days without any Thai visa but are required to show to Immigration Control on demand their tickets confirmed to leave the kingdom within 29 days from the date of arrival in the kingdom. If they desire to stay longer than 29 days. a tourist visa is required. With the tourist visa, a return ticket confirmed to leave Thailand is not required. "

Woody has the right idea. Also, like me, it gives you the option of getting cheaper flights back home.

I do and buy a ticket that guarantees me a Christmas return to Thailand.

Buying a ticket to leave at that time from the UK is getting more and more expensive.

Last April I was travelling with my 14 y/o daughter to Bali. We got into different immigtation lines at the Bali airport. My daughter looks 18, they wanted to see her return ticket and wanted to see USD or T/C. Once I entered the picture everything was ok. They thought she was a working girl. ;D ;D ;D

Most airlines allow you to change your trturn date with out any penalties or hidden charges. Have done it on Korean a few times. Make a return date sometime around whene you think you may return and change it accordingly. As Tom said, i suggest as well you play by the rules regarding the visa. Hope this helps. Cheers, B-Man!
