For the cheap charlies out there Phuket Air has got around to publishing its Gatwick-Bangkok schedule which is effective from 2 June (the return times look a bit dodgy - it should be a 06:15 arrival methinks:

London - Bangkok

Flight No: 9R 617

Days of Operation: Wed Fri Sat

Departure: 14:00

Arrival: 07:55

Type of Aircraft: B747-200

Bangkok – London

Flight No: 9R 618

Days of Operation: Tue Thu Fri

Departure: 23:45

Arrival: 03:15

Type of Aircraft: B747-200

Phuket Airlines

Once you are in country there is now a host of low-cost carriers flying all over the place .......

Bangkok Airways

Nok Air

OneTwo-Go

Orient Thai

Air Asia

PB Air

Air Andaman

I can get a deal through Touchdown of 139.00 gbp as I work for a cargo agent . The published fares I don't know. Unfortunately the days don't fit in with my shift schedule but I might get a quote to see if they do that deal in august . Me thinks "not".

Tom,

Any clues on what the fares are likely to be ?

Roland,

Still trying to find out and will post as soon as I get prices/agents or any other info. ThaiJet, another LCC, are currently doing Frankfurt-Bangkok (via somewhere in the middle east, I think) for 300 Euros return so it's anybody's guess where Phuket Air will pitch themselves.

The refuelling stop is in Sharjah. The 329 euro price is ostensibly for a flight for a package holiday, to be ticketed immediately on payment. The travel period is between the 24th of April and the 20th of June and is for a duration of no more than a month.

Outside of this, tickets are between 100 and 400 euros more.

Roland,

The price is GBP 405 plus tax up to 31 Oct.

The price over Xmas is only GBP 450 plus tax which I think is pretty good for the guys down your way.

Thanks to the guys at WorldPlus travel for the info.

Tom,

Not a bargain really considering that EVA has a fare around that price most of the year and then there is the reliability factor plus not being able to collect miles for free trips upgrades etc.

Even Garuda was cheaper than that so for me I'll stick to EVA or Thai unless they drop their prices by about a ton.

I'm going back in july I checked the the phuchet airline site for prices on the dates they fly according to schedule and all I got back was that there was nothing available on that date. When i get that shit on a site I never use it again as it is false advertising or else the site is not the standard it should be

Guys,

Crackpot was warning you about using a Boeing 747-200.

Have a look at the ThaiJet site and the Sunline site. Sure both are in German and sure both seem to offer low fares, but look at the aircraft in the pictures.......

It is a Boeing 757-200. Ok if you enjoy plenty of take-off and landing cycles and have time to spare............but surely spending your time in Thailand is more important.

Tom,

Thanks for clearing up how these stormtroopers in the Fourth Reich got there. I had always thought they were parachuted in from Junkers Ju-89 "Tante Ju's", you know , these corrugated iron tri-motor things. :P

Forgot to post but a couple of weeks ago I booked the Phuket deal for cargo agents through Touchdown. 8th till the 21st aug.

It's buggered up my holidays as their schedules don't fit in with my shifts.I'll just have to work some more OT for lieu days.

180.50 gbp return .

It might be a crap airline. It might be flying out of lgw when I work at lhr .It might be a crap departure time. It might have mucked up my hols but I'll take my chances at this price .

If no one flies them before I go I'll let you know what I think.

Anyway I'll post a report on them if no one does before .

Etihad are currently around GBP 375 incl tax ex LHR from most agents from 1 Sep up to 31 Oct. They are commencing Gatwick services (3 days a week) from 1 Sep, increasing to daily flights from Oct 12 so I would imagine their prices for Nov will be around the same mark. They should haves released their full winter schedule and prices by the Aug Bank Holiday weekend.

Thanks jfq and Tom,

Gatwick is becoming more attractive to me, recently spent 2 1/2 hours check in at Heathrow with EVA, no time for duty free etc
