I have never been Pataya - only to Bangkok for a few days - Where is it best to stay in the Pataya area? My friend Jim says stay in Jomteen or some such place while my other friend says I should stay in downtown Pattaya where the action is.

Any suggestions for an American on a budget?

Herbie,

That's a tough question to answer with out more details. If you need a pool check out www.flippergroup.com If your looking for good budget hotel with AC,TV, in room safe and fridge www.skytoppattaya.com will float your boat. Both hotels are guest friendly and close to the beach in Pattaya.

I added the Sabai Inn www.sabainn.com another good hotel. I've stayed at all the hotels I recommend.

Pattaya is the place for newbies. If you don't like it you can always move to Jomtien. It is quieter there. You came to Thailand for quiet?

Good advice above. A compromise hotel to the Flipper hotels would be my favorite, the Sabai Lodge on Soi2. Great pool, helpful staff, near beer bars and soapies and the Big C for shopping. But by comparison to anything on Sois 7 and 8 it is quiet. Also, take a look in the Hotel Reviews section. A ton of info there.

Pattaya is the place .Just make sure that you head for the FLB soon as and meet some boardies .Introduce yourself to Ben the manager then you should be OK.

As laffnliv says look up the Hotel Review it has a pretty good cover.

The main action is in Pattaya but Soi 2 is almost as far from Walking Street as Jomtien is so it really depends upon what you want.

I'd suggest somewhere from the Welcome Plaza (near Walking Street) through to those advised above around Soi 13 down to Soi 8. I wouldn't really head further away on a first trip. Then think about the type of hotel, your budget and the facilities you want.

You can't go wrong at the Flipper House on Soi 7. You can go north to the Big C area quickly by baht bus. You can go quickly to Walking street the same way. Tops is close for cheap grub, and stuff including 2 ATM's. It has a nice pool. It is close to the action on Soi & and 8. You can walk to any place if you have the time and energy. Has an internet cafe in house.

IMHO, is the best base of operations if you don't know what you want or for a newbie.

But BTW, I live in Jomtien!

Cheers

I would recommend staying in Pattaya, all the action is there, even though there are bars in Jomtien. As for a place to stay, I always find the sunshine in soi 8 a nice place, their new wing is quite ok and they have a really nice staff.
