I went to the Open at Troon this week and during practice managed to get the views from some of the players as to who will win the Rideher Cup.

Firstly I talked to Tom Weiskopf

(Duece) “Hey Tom who do you think will win the 2004 Rideher Cup?”

(Tom) “At Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, I think”

(Duece) “Hold it Tom, not that Mickey Mouse comp, THE RIDEHER CUP”

(Tom) “oh yes, Sorry Duece, has to be the US team”

Sergio was in good form (not like his golf)

(Sergio) “Hey Ducie has to be Europe, if the Norwegians are there”

265Sergio_Garcia_02.jpg

Vijay Singh was in a hurry

(Duece) “Vijay who will win the Rideher Cup”

(Vijay) “Fuck off, I am away to practice”

Next I asked John Daly

(John) “I think I would like to play sounds a good piss up”

(Duece) “Yes John but who’s gonna win”

(John) “Has to be the good old US of A”

265John_Daly.jpg

Adam Scott and Butch Harmon had differing views

(Butch) “Has to be USA”

(Adam) “With Aussie Stevo in the team it has to be Europe”

Ernie Els and Retief Gooson were practicing together and both agreed with Pieman living in South Africa, it has to be Europe.

(Ernie) “I hear the Euros drink more than the US”

(Retief) “Yea and Pieman is the champ”

(Ernie) “Could me and Retief get some women over there?”

(Duece) “Sure Ernie no problems for your wallets”

Padraig Harrington

(Padraig) “To be sure it’s a Euro win be Jesus”

Nick price wrote down some numbers of BGs for when he’s next in Thailand

So opinions seem to be divided as to who will win the Rideher Cup in 2004.

Cheers from your roving reporter.

Excellent post Duece. Thanks a lot.

Hub,

Don't worry buddy. I'll stand you a ST with Gai from the Bufallo Bar - after all, she probably takes as many shots in one day as JD managed! :crying

Tom

p.s. BTW, have you any idea what Aeroflot is like for my next trip.

Hi Hub and Chesire.

Sorry to hear you have lost all your money after ChesireToms prediction.

So what’s it like walking beach Road looking for a cheap freelancer? :eyecrazy

Are you two guys playing a better ball comp?

Mind you I put my money on Freddy Jacobson, Padraig Harington and Micheal Campbell. So only the New Zealander left in the mix for me, but I got at 66-1 before the tournament started, so if he comes in will pay for a flight to LOS.

Be good out there and Hole a few from me and remember “never up never in” :P

Cheers

Duece,

Don't worry things ain't really that bad - just yet! JD was just our passport to high-living and expensive women - we'll just have to move down the food chain a bit, that's all. :P

I hear also you have to watch out as any hole within five feet he considers a "gimmee". :D

Hub

What's wrong with that? :D

When I played golf about 20 years or so ago, my game from tee to green was shite but I have to say that when I was on form I was pretty hot on the greens. One night on my local 9 hole course, I needed only 10 putts. Admittedly, I was probably chipping from just off the green a few times but that still takes some beating.

Of course, on other occasions, I have 3 putted from 3 feet and missed a simple tap in from 18 inches :nod , As I haven't played for more than 20 years, my putting skills will have long deserted me but hopefully, I can recover these pretty quickly. If I can't there's no hope for my game :crying

Ah, such is the game of golf.

As a follow up to my last post, my local 9 hole course, which had a par of 31 - 4 par 4's and 5 par 3's - boasts what has to be one of the hardest par 3's on any course anywhere in the world. The course is at Anstruther and is the 5th. It is 240 yards in length and does not have a single bunker on it. It doesn't need a bunker!

The medal tee is on the upper level whilst the green is some 50 feet below. However, the line to the green follows the slope of the hill and immediately in front of the green a bit of rock juts out so from the tee, you cannot see the green never mind the pin. From the tee, the green also slopes away from you so a direct shot at the green is unlikely to hold the green. The pin is usually situated near the front of the green from the tee where the slope is at its most severe.

Therefore the easiest way to drive the green is to play a shot where the ball moves from left to right in the air. Not easy for me as I used to play with a natural hook :D .

Oh and just to make the hole a little bit more difficult it is played straight into the prevailing wind! Also, the fairway on the lower level is bordered by the beach, which is out of bounds! I once failed to clear the rough when playing into a gale force wind! At the next hole which was then a mere 130 yards long we were all hitting 3 - irons to reach the green, which should give an indication of the strength of the wind. Down wind, I was able to go through the green with a half wedge :nod

I once played the 9 holes in 41 shots, which included a 9 at the 5th. I told a friend about this not mentioning to him which hole i had the 9 at. He guessed immediately which hole it was!

Have played Anstruther about 8 years ago and remember the hole well, a real beast of a par 3 right along the cliff side, I think I went through the back of the green if I remember right (not sure with 1st or 2nd ball though :nod )

We stopped at the Smugglers Inn in Anstruther for a few nights, playing Lundin Links and The Eden and Jubilee at St Andrews.

Was a good trip as far as I can remember (as pissed most of the time) :D

Looks like my player (Micheal Campbell) has hit the dust also today, I e-mailed Stevo in Austrailia today and told him to look at his odds, hope he didn't put money on him or will be another on Beach Road looking for cheap totty.

Hey Gimmies are fine as long as inside a putters length, just hope your partner plays with a broom handle putter. As for soft balls I hear you get allot more control with them and are usually better quality :nod

G'day Duece,

Went to my normal web betting site to put a few bob on Campbell but was met with a message that the Govt :nod had put some sort of ban on online betting on the event. Have no idea what it is all about and now don't care as it looks like it has saved me a bit of my hard earned.

:D

The leading players have now just about completed the front 9 holes of the last round and there's a 3 way tie at 9 under. It looks as though it'll be between Hamilton, Mickelson and Els though Frenchman Levet isn't out of it at 7 under.

Deuce,

Just caught up with this thread - great post.

I'm in the same boat as a few others here. Having taken 90 LTs to 10 about Ernie a few weeks ago, I had my dick ready in my hand as he stood over his putt on 18 and was already congratulating myself on my impeccable judgement.

Now, what's the cheapest route from Don Muang to Ekamai again ?

Cheers

Great post!

What an exciting last round and Hamilton deserved the victory for keeping his cool under pressure! I guess the guy who backed Ernie to win £1 million for a bet of £64,000 was sitting on the toilet for most of the final round - hope it wasn't you Pieman.

I recognised that shot out of a gorse bush that Ernie had at the 10th or 11th -SteveO has put me in some similar lies in the RideHer Cup foursomes!

I had a decent run for my money with my modest each way investment on Monsieur Levet at 100/1. And if Verplank hadn't screwed up on the 17th I would have had a payout on him as well.

I hope that the Open has been a good warm up for the real event in Pattaya in November. Watch this space for news about the RideHer Cup.

Cheers

Doggie
