Has anyone had a gold crown fitted in Thailand? I was given a quote by my dentist today to have my two front teeth crowned. Basically it's going to cost me £400 for a standard crown and approximately £650 for a gold crown. Now we've all heard the rumours that dental treatment is cheaper in Thailand, but is it true? How much would it cost me in Thailand? I'm thinking I would be better off waiting until the next time I'm in Thailand to have the work done. Obviously Thai gold would be too soft to use for a crown so they would have to use something more like English gold, mixed with metal. Can they do this? I can't say I have ever seen a Thai with a gold crown.

Yes that caught me out once. I'd modified my signature slightly from the one that was in an old passport that was just about to expire and I couldn't get a TC changed in MBK.

While the grammar and spelling police are here I'd like to add that "I" should always be a capital. Careful, you may need an explanation with that one.

Fair enough but it's the truth, if you can't even count to ten in Thai it does make you ignorant to the language. You can hardly desribe yourself as "knowledgeable" can you? No, and I'm not saying it does! Actually I could count to a million if I had to. Even you must be able to admit that as a seasoned traveller to Thailand, not being able to count to ten is a bit lame? So being a monger is a prerequisite for membership to this forum? And being married means I'm not allowed to be a member? Sorry, I didn't realise that was against the rules, I must have overlooked that the last time I consulted them. I'll always be a monger mate, I'm having a sabbatical for the time being.

In my experience (particularly in the UK) Thai people will very often pretend they don't understand you even when they do. The Thai people where my wife works used to pretend they didn't understand me, now they know me they understand the Thai I speak just fine.

Exactly. Considering we're dealing with people so ignorant they haven't even bothered to learn how to count to ten after mulitple trips to Thailand over the years, it's doubtful they're going to understand the differences in phonetic translations.

TC's are your best bet. I usually take a mixture of these and cash. I only use the ATM as a last resort as I begrudge paying the fees involved, however small. With TC's, you get just as good an exchange rate as cash and there are places available to change them all over Thailand. In the popular tourist places like Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui there are literally hundreds of places where you can change them. The only place you will struggle to change them is somewhere like Koh Samet but I always change up enough in advance if I have run out of cash and I'm going somewhere isolated like that. The best thing about TC's is that they are worthless to anyone other than the owner and if you lose them you can get them back without much hassle, only a phone call and, in my experience, a trip to Bangkok to get the new ones.

You'd be surprised how helpful knowing how to count in Thai can be when it comes to money. Must have saved me a few quid, no doubt.

Well yes, it is. There have been an inordinate number of times knowing how to speak some of the language has given me an advantage and made things easier for me in Thailand. I congratulate you on your appreciation and respect for Thailand and it's culture. Each to their own, it takes all sorts of people to make this world!
