  1. There are some fees on the statute books which are like Bt2 or something. Even a copy birth certificate came in at something like Bt14 or Bt16.
  2. Stating that the food is even remotely related to Tequila Reef is about as far from a glowing recommendation as you can get.
  3. It really depends on how long you are staying for. Somewhere which charges Bt600 a day might be available for much less than Bt18,000 a month. You can get some places for 12k a month I know, which would be Bt400 a day. Quite a few I'd bet are still around that figure. Getting something cheaper would also be possible but unlikely to be much cheaper for full laundry service and cleaning etc.
  4. Not sure but there must be plenty which actually have lifts that go up to the floor you are staying on, which have a balcony not just a ledge, which have full height ceilings and where you might actually have a safe in your room rather than having to supply your own pad lock. I actually think the place could be fantastic but it is let down seriously by the cheapness of it all and the lack of attention to detail and poor planning. I stayed there one night and checked out the next day.
  5. Don't know what the fuss is about. The guy went to the place and wasn't able to find nor get the Thai staff to find what he wanted. Now, if he had left, without trying the last fridge or whatever, then he would assume that this outlet did not have what he wanted and drive off the Foodmart or wherever to get it. He would then have no reason to ever go back to CC. Big signs, some English into Thai and vice versa translation card, laminated, for the staff with pictures preferably and a phone number for the western owner who can be contacted if the staff cannot resolve the issue.
  6. Its in Africa. That's enough to keep me away.
  7. What my changing my sheets has to do with the stated hotel's policy of only changing their sheets twice a week I do not know. And if you don't like my "pratting" then just hit the ignore button. Laundry costs are a bit item for hotels and some places swap yesterday's bottom sheet to become today's top sheet or vice versa. What I mean is that the sheet does two days on your bed. Most blokes are out shagging with different girls each day. Now I don't think you'd like to be 4th short time on the Soi 6 bed but what about being the 4th long time and maybe a dozen previous sex sessions and
  8. Very good point. It is too far at certain times and the cost will add up. You'll also get infuriated trying to get them to understand where it is, because most cannot fathom out maps on business cards.
  9. From a purely practical point of view, the sheer shock of the first few days is going to knock any plans for running around a city you don't know, looking for streets and buildings you are searching for, in order to find and then negotiate a rate for a few weeks or a month is unlikely to say the least. The ease of getting to and from the hotel to the places you want to visit is probably far more important than shaving off a couple of pounds on the rental. Pattaya Bay as quoted only changes the sheets and towels twice a week ! That is no good. A month there would come in around 14900+20
  10. I can't make a case for Phuket really if a budget is important. If being ripped off frustrates you, then you are going to have to deal with that or it can eat you up. I haven't been for a couple of years but I used to like Ao Nang in Krabi. Enough to do, nice beaches, places to get to, activities for the kids and island hopping if you want. Some bar activity and I used to really like it. I've also stayed at the JW Marriott in Phuket and it was in isolation but it was a full top package with S class pick up at the airport etc. Going into town cost maybe Bt1200 with the hotel limo and the sa
  11. I don't think I am the only one whose visits to Phuket are curtailed in number and duration by the attitudes and rip off prices in many areas, especially in regards to transportation. It limits where you can stay unless you want to double the price of your accommodation with "taxi" fees. It is the height of rip offs in Thailand.
  12. I think any of your Mr T., Mr Toom and countless other mini cab people would snatch your hand off for Bt1200 inclusive. I am sure there are cheaper and that we've seen them talked about here quite recently. I'm also surmising that Bt1200 would entice a cab dropping off to make the run easily.
  13. Driving takes about 75-90 minutes and a taxi from the airport is about Bt1600. You can get taxis for Bt1200 all day or even cheaper if you book. When the main airport was Don Muang, there was mileage in the argument to land at U-Tapao but with Swampy just over an hour to Pattaya, there is no argument. The drive out to U-Tapao is 45-60 minutes and there is nothing to do at the airport if you have to wait. I think that where Swampy is makes it fine for Bangkok or Pattaya and it certainly makes the journey when you are tired acceptable, rather than tedious.
  14. I guess people think there is something strange about a new member digging up a two year old thread and making a glowing recommendation for a hotel which most people have considered an utter dump for at least the last decade. It certainly was a dump last year when I walked past it.
  15. Residence Garden has 2 bedroom suites. The Four Seasons has high list prices but look around and you can cut these down a lot. Phone and email as well can deliver reductions http://www.fourseasonsplace.com/ They have 2 bedroom suites as well. I'm sure others can pitch in with some more recommendations.
  16. As a final check I'd count the HDMI inputs and other connectivity as well as future proofing for PC to TV. With Sophon Cable seemingly in for up to 20mb speeds (just read it, haven't seen it, so don't shoot the messenger), I would think that TV via the internet could be on the cards before you want to replace the TV.
  17. Quite the scene, pigs asking the pig-man for a license ! Not sure about the present situation but it used to be the case that city hall would only issue licenses on one or two days a week and you had to come back the following week or two weeks later for some alcohol license. Maybe the next one to check could post up as I guess most people would think you can get one on demand when that might not be the case.
  18. For the last 20 years, UK inflation has been around 2% per year (source http://www.rateinflation.com/inflation-rat...e.php?form=ukir ). Thai inflation has been far in excess of that and when looking at specific necessary requirements, such as housing, food, medical, transport etc. it is laughable to suggest that the UK "is one of the worst". The actual figures prove your assumptions to be completely wrong. And we haven't even started to factor in the effect of the historic FX collapse from a say 10 year average of around 65 (01/01/10 to 27/03/10) to a current figure of around 47 and a grea
  19. But there is no accounting for Thai inflation and the fact that his old age pension would be frozen at the rate payable when he left the UK. All medical services have to be paid for and the income is not really enough for today, nevermind in 10, 20 or 30 years time. IN the UK he will always have somewhere to live, around £130 a week pension every week, never have to pay for any medical treatment nor worry about visas etc. He might live 30 years or more. Around 30 years ago I was earning £30 to £50 a week and I was loaded. A pint cost around 15% of what it costs today. How far will 4%
  20. There are a couple who never settle down but most do, though most still play away. Going out to the bars or staying home alone tend to be the options most people face. I guess many guys hitch up because of company rather than some blinding sex or perhaps just because it is the better of two evils. I know I'm the sort of guy who likes to live with someone and I know that if I was alone I'd be out most nights. Another critical but vastly overlooked factor is that many guys live in relative shoe boxes, perhaps don't pay for home creature comforts and therefore staying at home is something to
  21. All these business brokers are fucking dreamers. I've tried to do business with all the established ones over the years, both buying and selling and they are worse than fucking useless. To see just how they operate, go ask them to sell something. All they rely on is mug punters coming with buckets full of cash and having no idea what anything is worth. A couple of the real estate guys are decent people but if you have a viable business, you don't need someone to hold your hand and collect 10% for doing nothing.
  22. Note that in all the shops, they only show you DVDs and will tell you all sorts of porkies as to why they cannot fix up UBC etc. Best head to Numchai and get them to show you some http://www.numchai.com/ Some models are better at regular TV than others and regular TV, not HD, is what you are going to be watching except for DVDs (perhaps) and downloaded stuff.
  23. As said, you've forgotten taxes. So you must be at least 55 in 4 years time to get what I presume is 25% as a lump sum, meaning your fund is worth £287,897.56 Are the annual payments after the 25% or before ? Or are these projections of what they think you will get in 4 years time ? Are you in shares or gilts ? or in transition ? I think you can forget 60 and 70 to the £1 and had better start thinking about 40/45/50 as your range. At today's rate of 48, you have 3.45m and potentially 630k per annum. Best to park 800k in a bank and forget about it. You don't qualify at 65k a mon
  24. It seems to appeal to the cheap charlie westerners in the boonies far more than the Thais who will scratch together the money for a Leo if possible. I think it is undrinkable but it does offer a cheap entrance drink to a place. No good for bars but perhaps a decent alternative at the bottom end for the draft drinkers.
  25. I think that is a fair assumption. I wonder just how many of the people who want to live in Thailand permanently but don't want to live in Pattaya have actually spent more than a few days in the boonies or even the nearest town of note to their girls's mama and papa ? OK, some go live there because they cannot afford Pattaya. Some people don't have a/c either ! I guess some people still think the world is flat. I think living past Suk creates a natural break and no matter how many quasi swimming brothels they put up (and which will surely die off as there cannot be sufficient business) and
