Koh Samet

I'll be heading down to Koh Samet next month for a few days break from Pattaya.

Can anyone provide a little insight on the island. Things to do with your gal, places to visit in the daytime, pubs to check out at nite ? Also, what is the best way to get to the ferry boat which is an hour or more ride south from Pattaya. Should we just take a taxi or is there a cheaper minivan that I can book ?

Any input will be much appreciated...........Thanks, Peace

Go south about 50 miles past Rayong and hug the coastline.. look for turn-offs to Ban Phe. This is where you get the ferry to take you to the island. You get to the village of Na Dan and you can take it from there. There are busses from Pattaya that travel there, that would be the most cost effective method of travel. Or you can taxi it.. Expect to pay about (possibly a little less) than a taxi fare from Bangkok.

Once on the island the main area with the most bungalos and activity is About a half-mile away from the ferry.. it's called Hat Sai Kaeo.. anywhere else on the island might not have enough activities for you.. the farther south on the island you go.. the fewer people, bars and restaurants there are. The island's only 4 miles long... so you could hoof it on foot.

Weekends are busy... it's best to go during the week.

Just to add a few words to what Ender wrote...

Taxi is great but it could be more confortable to grab a trip with a company (package).

The reason is that they still run by the "we go when we have enough passengers", at least most of the year.

If you book a trip with a minibus, it could save you some time in Ban Phe. Every hotel in Pattaya will sell you a trip.

Malibu travel is the only one I know, 2nd road around Soi Post Office. BUT, and BUT, they will normally only sell you a trip and hotel at the Vong/Wong Duan beach. They own a few places there.

If you want a bit of nightlife, if you can call it that at Samet, Wong Duan and Hat Sai Keow will be the place to go. Sai Keow Beach is a bit nicer.

The pier in Ban Phe is called Nuan Thip. It's the last of the piers when you come from the North.

I'm interested in trying a 1 or 2 night trip there in November when I am in Pattaya for 2 weeks. Can anyone tell me what packages from Pattaya cost and where to buy them? What are the places in Samet like? Is there a good one that's good to take a TG? I'd like a good place but I don't want an expensive place with Westerners getting uppity about an old guy with a young Thai chick. Advice from those who've made the trip with TG would be appreciated.

Thanks Hub, an interesting review of Koh Samet.

I had toyed with the idea of taking a TG here but my buddies said I would get bored. Having read your review it sounds a nice place for a short break. Nice to have a bit of a change of scene from Pattaya I think.
