Flight delays ........

Recommended Posts

Recent Times article:

AIRLINES will have to spend millions of pounds compensating passengers for flight delays and cancellations under a European regulation coming into force next month.

From February 17, passengers will be able to demand compensation of up to €600 (£416) if a flight of more than 3,500km (1,800 miles) is cancelled or overbooked.

Cancelled flights of up to 1,500km will mean £173 compensation and up to £277 for flights up to 3,500km. Passengers will also be entitled to free meals, drinks and two free phone calls during long delays. The airline will have to provide them with a hotel room if the delay continues overnight.

The assistance must be provided even when the delay is caused by a factor outside the airline’s control, such as severe weather. The regulation applies to all airlines departing from airports in EU member states.

Can you see them paying you several hundred pounds on the spot.

If it happens it will take you months to get your money. Remember most of us are covered by travel insurance so there will be that complication involved. How much. who pays what.

Clubman,

I'll defer to Tom's greater knowledge, but I know people that have gotten cash payments here in the US on overbooks.

Yes ive done it in the USA compensation plus free flight works well over there but in the UK normally you get a voucher for free cup of tea and a biscuit.

Wont happen here unless you write several letters and complain to everone in management at the airline. Then months later

So you're going to fly with Phuket Air .......

Hi tom .

I came out with phuket air about a week ago and was expecting the worse, well what a surprise .

Bang on time !

Plenty of food and drink (liked it better than my recent Eva and sing air flights !!!)

Plane was a ex-klm ,seats o.k. even for my fat arse

I reckon if they keep being late when these new eu regulations come in to effect later this month they might go bankrupt!!!

Regards

Matt

One point I didn't see being covered is - What happens if your flight is diverted for some reason?

On Airline (the programme that looks at easyJet's operations - or a copy of BBC's Airport except that it concentrates on one airline rather than one airport) one flight was diverted because Luton (I think) was closed because of bad weather. The airline didn't give a toss about their customers inconvenience. It wasn't their fault - so basically make your own way home or back to Luton where your car is.

Airlines should also be expected to help passengers get back to the correct arrival airport.

I keep hoping that my flight back from Bangkok will be diverted to Edinburgh - though I'm not sure whether the runway is long enough to take a 747!
