I just read on Thaivisa.com that Vientiane is moving from 2nd Road on March 25.

Poster said it will move to Walking Street and a Robinson's will be opened on the present 2nd road site.

Anybody have confirmation of this?

Johnny,

Last month there was a post about the nearby Palm Villa being demolished and that the Vientiane would soon follow, but no other details.

A company called Siam Future Development has purchased about 7.5 rai of land and will be building a Lifestyle Center there about 20,000 sq mtrs. It will have a 10 screen cinema, bowling lanes, a high end supermarket, restaurants etc.

An extract from the Bangkok Post:

"Siam Future Development Plc, the SET-listed developer of shopping malls, will spend 400 million baht developing two new lifestyle shopping centres this year.

The first project, costing 250 million baht, will be developed in Pattaya. The other, at a cost of 150 million baht, will be on Soi Aree off Phahon Yothin Road in Bangkok.

Managing director Somnuk Pojkasemsin said the 20,000-square-metre Pattaya project would be developed as a lifestyle shopping and entertainment centre. Major tenants will include a 10-screen Major Cineplex and bowling lanes, a high-end supermarket, indoor and outdoor restaurants and a food centre."

I must admit that although the new place will be a welcome addition I always found the Vientiane to be a "safe bet" when taking a TG for dinner.

Always a safe bet. I was intoduced to it by my first TGF and really enjoyed it. Any time I suggest going there to eat I get a happy response.

Excellent value, good service, the beer is cold and the food is hot. :eyecrazy

I'll be sad to see it go as I really like the place, a little set back from the road to block out some of the noise. Always had good food and reasonable service. If they do relocate, I hope it doesn't end up on Walking Street or out in the sticks.

Vientiane is my favourite restaurant in Pattaya and i will be said to see it go. The performance of the girls might vary but I've always found Vientiane to be consistently good, and very reasonably priced too.

Can Pattaya support another 10 movie screens. :beer Whenever I've been to the 2 at the Royal Garden or the 6 at the Big C, the movies that I saw were less than a third full. This would more than double the current total.

The info I got was that it was re-locating to walking street. here come higher prices, i guess.

Vientiane or the shopping centre? :beer :D

vientiane, i think as rent will be higher.

got shopping centres up the yingyang here but no vientiane, only blanded out "tourist thai" food.

monkeyman, you are on the ground, do you have any more info about it?

Well, a move to Walking Street would make a lot of sense as the biggest criticism you ever hear of the Vientiane is its location.

So if it goes to Walking Street the prices will go up and most likely the food will become more bastardised to western palates. At the moment, it is sought out by those who want to eat there and judging by recent visits, it is not doing too badly in its current location.

I thought it's location was fine as its right on 2nd RD just a short distance from the Royal Garden. Walking St could be better if its near the enterance but it could be all the way down by Tony's or the pier.

Yes. Right now it seems more of a niche place for Thais and those falangs whose TGs have introduced them to it.

Walking St. means mainstream tourists/rubberneckers in the Thai-Land Theme Park.

Let's hope it doesn't happen.

I think that the criticism tends to be on aesthetic rather than geographical grounds. Good accessibility, bad ambience.

Seems many realized, as I just did, that the Vientiane is my favorite Pattaya restaurant, the one I don't want to change.

One of my favorites also.

Today saw a BIG sign on the place telling of the closing. I was on a baht bus at the time so didn't get all it said. But think it said it was relocating to Walking Street somewhere just past the Nong Nual seafood restaurant. Didn't catch the date of closing either. Will report if no one beats me to it as it will be a couple of days before I am down that way again.

Yep, March 26. Will move to Walking Street across the street from Nang Nual Seafood. Will probably lose some family business as now you will have to walk almost the lengh of Walking Street to get to it. Like running a gauntlet. But OK for me. Will help increase the appetite. Even for food.

I'm sorry to hear that it is finally going. I will however have the opportunity to savour it in its present location later this week.

I might nick or ask for a menu to see how much they increase prices in Walking Street !

Took a walk down Walking Street a few nights ago. Can't figure out where Vientianne is moving to. There are two restaurants located across from Nang Nual now. So where is it going to locate? I didn't spot any signs to give a hint. Maybe Vientianne will simply take over one of the existing restaurants and just give it a name change.
