Udon Thani is best visited with your Long Term GF in tow.

There are some bars and naughty massages, but to go there without a lady could be just the wrong concept.

Most expat bars are situated around the city center, where the Charoensri Hotel is situated. Great, big truely 4 star Hotel at about 1200 - 1300 Bt, better reserve in advance as they are booked out very often.

Other ok Hotels (in the 1000 Bt range) are the Charoen and the Ban Chiang.

The town is quite nice, once you get to know it, but probably only for the initiated.

Getting there from Pattaya by BG express (Bus, 10+ hours, about 500 Bt one way), I prefer to fly Air Asia from Bangkok (2 flights a day, about 2000 Bt return). Also flights by Thai Airways (3 flights, 3600 Bt) and Nok Air (1 flight, 2500 Bt.) Flight takes one hour, Airport is quite near the center, most Hotels have a free shuttle, otherwise a taxi can be had for 100 - 150 Bt.

Check out Udon Thani Webpage for more details.

Stevoman, check www.udonmap.com for all the info on Udon. I have just come back from there after 4 months and leave in 3 weeks for another 4 months. Another alternative is the overnight train. Get a lower sleeper berth for you and an upper for your TGF if you bring one...

Udon Thani (population (225,000) is a wonderful town to visit or to live. The Udon map site is best to start, pick up paper copy at Steve's bar. The P4P scene is sparce but good freelance action across from shopping center. Also good place to find GTG wife or GF as it has large University in center of town. Cost of living is reasonable and a lot of expats live there. 4 or 5 9 hole golf courses, 2 18 hole ones within hour drive. I have nice stucco, tile roofed, walled yard 3 bedroom home in good complex with my Thai wife that costs me a whopping B6000 per month with a guarantee that the landlord will never raise the rent.
