What is the possition now as to passengers using crash hats on motor cycle taxis? Are the police taking a firm stance on this(and getting their 200bt?) each time? :

About as firm a stance as Thais take on anything. A hit or miss situation, though the cops are enforcing the law more often. I don't know how much the fine currently is, but I think it is the moto-taxi guy that has to pay. For myself, I avoid motorcycles.

Fine used to be around B400. They also used to give you a 24 hour "no helmet" pass once you paid the fine.

Got stopped on a motorcycle taxi in Bangkok about 3 weeks ago because I wasn't wearing a helmet, and the boys in brown fined the driver 250 Baht. Didn't seem fair that he'd be out of pocket (having agreed on 50 Baht for the journey) so I offered to pay, but he was very, very reluctant to take it. Restored my faith in human nature a bit.

i got stopped by police box on 2nd rd last may, i got fined but tilac /passenger no problem, i think it was 200 baht.

(I had better say i was stopped by a policeman near the police box or some smart arse will get me.)

In Pattaya they don't seem to be enforcing this the driver must have a helmet but it seems the passenger doesn't. This said I notice that increasing numbers of Motor cycle taxi drivers are carrying a spare helmet.

 

They are having a crackdown on checking licences and paperwork though so if you rent a bike make sure that you have a copy of the rental agreement and your licence on you and that the 2 road tax? documents are on the bike these are the ones with the year date thai fashion (2548) on them and are often fixed to the bike under the seat.

The only motorbike I will cock my leg over, is the GF's at home. She is extra carefull, but likes to drive on the quick side.

 

Some of the bits of plastic, that pass as a crash helmet in LOS, are a joke. My Arai cost £200 a few years ago, but I feel safe-ish wearing it.

 

Thing is, a broken leg/arm/back are best avoided. That's why I will travel by 4 wheels in Pattaya thanks.

I guessed it was a helmet, is it one of those shaped like a German Army ? The ones with American Navy on, they sell in PTY.

 

I bought a helmet in Big C, got the GF a half decent one with visor. She had her stolen at the market up country. A policeman wanted to fine her 200 bht on the way home, she offered him 300 if he caught the thief, he let her off the fine.

If your head is only worth 600B to you...buy it. Otherwise, buy the best you can get no matter the price. Best idea yet....don't ride a motorbike!

this is what can happen if you dont have a full face helmet

 

I prefer to ride the baht bus, although I will ride a motobike taxi on 3% of my travels on vacation. Howard on pattaya citynews says motobike taxis rarely get into crashes, as its their work. Although it could happen, it is rare for the taxi drivers.

There are pros +cons to full/ open face helmets,

but at slow speed a helmet can save you ,

you could use the one given to you by the shop you hire bike from .

but if you buy your own that fits and is comfortabe to use ,

you will be less tempted not to use it even in the Thailand heat .

I see were they are going to make all "foringers" were "white helmets" so they can be easily IDed.

don't know if it's just for driver or passanger also.

great way to racial profile, I think each nationality should have their own colores or maybe just slap a large sticker with your countries flag on it,
