Seems like THAI is not that lucky with it's european flights recently, after the flight to Munich had to do an emergency landing - now this:

THAI jet runs into trouble

A Thai Airways flight bound for Bangkok from Zurich was forced to return to the Swiss city on Wednesday after dumping 45 tonnes of fuel over Germany.

It was the third emergency involving the national carrier in less than two weeks.

Flight 971, which was carrying 169 passengers, encountered a technical problem with its air pressure data system while flying over southwestern Germany, shortly after leaving Zurich International Airport, officials said.

Acting on advice from Zurich airport, the pilot of the McDonnell Douglas 11 aircraft dumped 45 tonnes of fuel to ease its weight before returning to the airport.

It took about seven hours to fix the problem before the flight resumed, a source at the Transport Ministry said. The flight arrived in Bangkok at 12.35pm yesterday.

When it dumped the jet fuel, the aircraft was flying at a height of 3,660 metres over the Black Forest between Schwenningen and Schluchsee. It was early afternoon.

The Swiss aviation authority, Skyguide, said the fuel had to be dumped so the plane could attain a safe weight to land at Zurich. The fuel dumping presented no danger to people or the environment.

Other Thai international flights have had close calls recently.

On Sunday, a flight from Beijing to Bangkok was forced to return to the Chinese capital because of an engine problem.

On May 24, a Thai Boeing 747-400 bound for Munich from Bangkok made an emergency landing in Calcutta, India, after pilots reported a crack in a window.

But the swiss obviously know where to build an airport - they made sure that if a plane has problems right after take off, it dumps the fuel on the germans :beer
