gentleman: i am thinking of winging usa and moving to pattaya. my wife and childern live in hua hin and the desire to be with them overrides all other considerations. my best friend, bob miller-chicago, just returned from a couple weeks stay. he was a regular at fob bar. bob informed me that there were many teaching jobs avialble at the universities. i have a b.s. degree and taught high school for 6.5 years. for 2 years i taught english. my question is this, are there any other requirments? what pay range is the salary? are teachers paid by number of classes taught? if there are any teachers on this site i would deeply appreciate some info. if not where can i locate info on this topic. reguards bill toms orlando, florida

From what I've seen is that the teaching jobs around Pattaya seem to be VERY low paying somewhere between 20k and 35k baht a month, side gigs I've seen pay around 200 to 300 bht an hour. At that rate of pay it will be very difficult to live even a somewhat normal life....more like you did while you we're a student not alone trying to raise a family! Good side is the education you already have is sufficent, with maybe a TESOL requirment. Good luck!

not that I have any room to talk about spelling or sentance structure but your post doesn't indicate any great useage of the english langaue!!! :D

you can do a seach I look it up latter when I have time, cyber or one of the BKK posters has given links to thai education policies and procejures alone with areas needing english teacher, if I remeber correctly a lot need up north, don't remeber the pay scale though. think it was this board, although it may have been bangkoktonight.

Hi,

have you looked at a map of Thailand? Pattaya is not close to Hua Hin and also a bad place to find a job as teacher as too many already do the same. Why not try to find a work in Hua Hin or Bangkok?

Best thing currently is to check with local schools when you are in Thailand. The government has introduced a proagramme to improve the english language skills of Thais and that includes employing farang (native speakers have better chances but that isn't a requirement) teachers in various government schools all over the country. The biggest teaching industry exists in Bangkok where well qualified teachers can earn good money teaching private lessons.

http://www.ajarn.com was already mentioned, other places to look are the english language papers.

I have posted some links in the past, but I am not sure to which thread, you might just as well try to do a search.

Be aware that places like Pattaya and Bangkok already have a shitload of teachers, it takes no big brain to guess that the competition in these places can be tough.

Also, a job with a government school will make the Visa and work permit thing a lot less painful for you even tough naturally government schools will in most (but not all) cases pay lower wages.

In Bangkok some friends of mine who teach earn between 20,000 to 60,000 Baht. The ones with the higher incomes do mostly private lessons and do not have a work permit for the most part. That may cause you serious trouble but may as well work out for years and years without any problem. Think about it for yourself.

cheers

PS: I am no english teacher, so never mind my grammar or spelling errors, I am not even a native speaker :o

You will need to do a TEFL course. "Teach English as a Foreign Language" there are many courses advertised in Thailand or you can do one online before you go http://www.onlinetefl.com

A friend of mine is teaching in Bangkok, gets 40,000 bht a month and says there is loads of work over there. It's OK to live on as long as you don't try to live in Holiday Mode
