Foto,

I stayed at a quiet resort on the southeast end of the island. I give lots of details concerning price / activities / room amenitites / travel arrangements / pictures in my trip report located on Page 7 of the Trip Reports section of the Members area. Has a date of late May sometime. Don't know if I can include a link as this is the public area.

Look for my name: "wbill" ...and... "Part 1 of 3"

The resort's name is "Sametville." Is is quiet, very quiet. The Deluxe Rooms have AC...quiet scenic beach. Little cabanas where you can lay / sit w/ drink and look out over the water. Food is good, but only served during certain hours...only downside I thought was the firmness of the bed (thai style). Other couples were there...some like to chat...others just wanted peace and quiet.

If you don't mind spending about $100 + US a night for a room...the beautiful "Ao Prao Resort" (think I spelled it right) on the South end of the island is really neat...if you do the Jimmy Smile boat trip, you will stop at that resort for a beach visit. Very nice...but you don't need to spend that much to get a very nice room on Samet.

If you have any questions feel free to post here for the benefit of others or PM me.

Take Care, Bill

There's another resort right beside Ao Prao, called Lima Coco. Stayed there once, for about 2300baht I recall. A/cond etc etc, and you can easily use the facilities of Ao Prao next door.

I'll second Lemons recommendation, stayed at the lima coco back in June, nice place, very quiet. The busiest day there I counted 6 other people on the beach apart from me and the tilac. A very relaxing place to unwind after Pattaya, especially taking a canoe out and paddling out to sea to watch the sunset.

Also stayed at the Malibu Garden Resort on Vongduern beach in March, a bit more going on in that area but the Malibu Garden itself was a bit of a dump.

Mmmmm....

Good info. here!

I'm planning another trip to Ko Samet myself this Oct....the Lima Coco sounds nice...thanks lemons and Sanchez. Really didn't care to spend the cash to stay at the Ao Prao Resort....the south end of the island is really beautiful...warmer and clearer water.

I'll also note that the sunset view from these southern end resorts is the best...as the resorts on the east side of the island do not have the sunset view...but they do have a wonderful sunrise view as per the picture in my TR.

Thanks...Take Care, Bill

pfotoguy and wbill,

I just remembered something I shoud add re Lima Coco. If you're like me and are likely to select a standard room .... be aware that the resort is built up a hillside. When you book, request a room as close to the bottom as possible.

We ended up there without a booking, and although it was a great place, we had to do the 'mountain goat' thing, to get to/from our room.

(if your budget runs to the elite rooms, disregard this advice as they're all in great spots).

Cheers, Lemons

PS: The room rate includes b/fast and the ferry trip over. Not so sure about the return trip, but it's not expensive.

Lemons,

Thanks, for the additional information.

Ya, looking at a Standard or Junior Deluxe....good to know the ferry fare is inclusive.

If anything else comes to mind...let us know.

Take Care, Bill

gs joe,

If you mean moterbikes on Samet in general? Then yes freely available from quite a few sopts on the western side. Be aware the roads are not the best, and I presume the farang falloff rate is right up there with Samui and Chang.

If you referred to pushies, I'm not sure but I presume so.

If you want a Tahiti overwater bungalow experience at rock bottom prices try:

http://ash-hotel.com/banploysamed.htm

Stayed there for 1200 baht in January '04 though the website is quoting much higher reates. We inquired at their sister resort on Hat Sai Kaew, and since we were two couples without luggage they gave us the great deal.

You do NOT want beachfront, these units suck. You want out on the water.

No tV, or hot water though. If you're not staying tehre, check it out for lunch though.

Hat Sai Kaew is the best beach IMO. I don't like the vibe of Ao Prao.

Unlike Pattaya, the cheap hotels blow, so if you're making the effort to bring your Thai girl for a special experience, I would not go chaep on the hotel (and in Pattaya I do go very cheap, on the hotel).

The safest hotel choice is the Sai Kaew Resort (not Sai Kaew Villa). You'll be in the nicest hotel at the location that's the path of least resitance. About 3000 baht.

Lots of fun dirt roads for your motobike. I prefer renting two and let my girl have her own. Thais think this is really nutty though!

Partyanimal:

Thanks! that place looks great and didn't even know about it after several trips there and now want to give it a spin.

Agree on Diamond Beach (Hat Sai Kaew) and Sai Kaew Resort. What did you pay for motorbikes? I couldn't get them for less than 300/day.

Those gravel-covered steep partially-paved hills are tough going down, especially after a night of margaritas :chogdee2 . Even tougher, my friend said he and his TG slowed to bypass a big branch blocking the road one night - until it moved!

Hub, As i recall, 300 was the cheapest bike. Some places are 400 on Samet. Maybe expensive cause the dirt roads beat the shit out of the bike?

What's nice about the Tahiti Overwater Bungalow place is that the bike ride home at night is all paved. What I don't like is there are some unleashed dogs that are a pain when u get off the bike to take the motorized boat to the water.

The name of the general manager is/was Vuttichai Boonthrivach. On their card they list two phone numbers, 038-644188-(9), and 01-7729155. Don't know if info is still correct.

Their sister resort is Ploy Talay on Diamond Beach but i don't recomend that place.

Ao Prao Resort -stayed there in July, superb, had a bungalow right at the end of the beach, get the Thai girl to book it, you'll get a good discount (from 7000 to around 4400 per night) You'll also notice the food and drink there is expensive.
