Areca Lodge have asked me to pay a 3,000BHT deposit which I guess is ok - didnt happen last time - but they want me to fax a form over, with my credit card details AND a photocopy of my credit card, including the 3 digit security code.

Is this normal? Im paranoid about my credit card floating around like that.

Thoughts?

More and more hotels ask for it today, fax is also a lot safer than internet for you. So if you want to stay there you have to do it or find an other hotel.

I've had to do something similar a few times. It protects the hotel from those people who book and then don't bother cancelling when they change their mind or find somewhere better.

I have a part-time job in a hotel in the US. We do the same thing here. The 3-digit code to ensure you have the card in your possession and did not simply steal the CC#s off the internet or statement. No worries.

If you are going to supply CC details only phone them through to the reservations department after ascertaining who you should be speaking to at the other end. Sending your CC details by e-mail or fax is just asking for trouble and I doubt your CC issuer would honour any liability for any resultant fraudulant transactions.

Believe it or not 99% of the Hotels are NOT in business to rip you off. If they did, they wouldn't be in business very long. And yes, you do have protections against fraud from you CC company. In the US, you are only liable for the 1st $50, and that's ASSUMING you don't notify them of the fraud. (if you do, your liability is zero). Don't know about outside US though - maybe different.

The Areca Lodge (and businesses of that caliber) are reputable and take great pride in their reputations for doing a good business. That being said, there can always be the occasional dishonest employee (even in LOS?). But then again, if you saw the sweet little young ladies working at Areca you would not suspect them capable of something as nefarious as CC fraud.

.again, if you saw the sweet little young ladies .... you would not suspect them capable of something as nefarious as CC fraud.

They will and they do. Happens more than it should in Thailand, in good and bad hotels. Once used a CC, and last time I used a CC in Thailand, to pay the bill at one of Bangkok's "better hotels." Within 5 or 6 weeks the card information was being used in France to make numerous purchases. The issuing bank called me on a major holiday to inquire about the transactions.

At the present time, as has been noted in another thread, certain U.S. Banks will not allow cash withdrawals with an ATM card in Thailand and there is no indication as to when the restricition will be removed.

It worked OK for me

I faxed mine off yesterday and got a reply the next day that they received the fax and that my room was booked.....

I just photocopied the front of the CC and didn't bother with the back

Areca seem pretty on the ball. I did as they asked and got an immediate email confirmation. All along Ive dealt with the same person in reservations.

db74,

I have stayed at Areca 5 times and loved it.

I have NEVER sent my CC details, but they do take a copy of it on check in,no probs there.

On the girl side of things, you can take TWO girls to your room with nop charge, but breakfast is only supplied for TWO guests not three.

You will love Areca, and will have no problems at all.

Heres a tip.Nancy is the Manager and she loves Aussie Chardonay,so take a bottle or two for her,and you will get anything you want.

Ned.
