August is prime vacation time and this looks like a good price. If it was me, I'd book it now.

If you could wait till Sep Cathay Pacific has a great deal, check out their website,

think maybe Eva and China Air may have a good deal at that time also. Hope this helps. Have a good one and enjoy. Old Bud

some deals on site like travelocity, cheaptickets, expedia... all have tickets for around 1100. but some of the tickets have like 179 US for taxes while others have only 63. the ones that are 63 have less of a layover so i was just wondering if there were any hidden taxes that i would have to pay upon arrival since there is such a big difference. thanks for all your advice so far.

Brama,

Without knowing the connections you're considering, it's hard to say for sure, but I believe those taxes and fees are tied to takeoffs and landineds; i.e., layovers. So, an itinerary having two stops or layovers would be assessed taxes and fees twice, while one stop would only see one charge beyond those for a non-stop. I've seen one-stop itineraries where the base ticket was slightly higher than a two-stop version to the same destination that ended up being cheaper after the inclusion of taxes and fees. It's all meant to be kept too confusing for us to figure out, of course, but I think the number of airports "utilized" is a major component of the rhyme and reason.

Thanks Pen. the flights i was looking at were all one stop flights. i believe all the ones that had 63 of taxes and fees connected through japan while the ones that had more connected through taiwan. i thought it might be the airport, but was wondering why such a big difference and if there was anything that i might need to pay upon arrival or departure at any of cities i land in. taipai or tokyo (depending on which flight i choose) and bangkok and maybe even phuket.

I have never paid an arrival or departure tax at Narita. There is a 500 baht departure tax at the BKK airport .

Yeah, these aren't departure taxes in the same sense as what's collected at BKK. These are the varying fees set by every major airport for landing and / or taking off. Narita's are lower than those in Taipei and they're part of those delightful group off additional charges we've all come to know as "fuel surcharges and taxes" -- sort of like an individual VAT for each airport.
