Air and city traffic in Bangkok June 8-14, 2006

Travellers who intend to fly to or from the Bangkok or transit through the airport on stop overs between 8-14 June should expect disruption to their itineraries because the airspace over Don Muang International Airport in Bangkok will be closed to all flights upon arrivals and departures of foreign dignitaries attending the 60th anniversary celebrations of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's ascension to the throne.

Visitors are advised to anticipate delays and to factor these into their itineraries. They should also arrive early for check-in at airport.

Visitors who plan to drive within the city centre should also be aware that increased security measures have been put in place in anticipation of the celebration. These measures will add to traffic congestion, particularly in the city centre and along assigned roads that will be closed for the festivities and official guest motorcades.

Roads to be closed for royal celebrations

Area access, parking to also be affected

Some major downtown roads and adjoining neighbourhoods will be closed before and during the 60th anniversary celebrations of the King's accession to the throne, traffic police said. No vehicles will be allowed on designated roads or to enter nearby areas from June 8-13. These will be both lanes of Uthong Nai road, the entire Royal Plaza of Dusit Palace and both lanes of Si Ayutthaya road from the Royal Plaza intersection to the 1st Division of the King's Guard intersection.

As well, two lanes of Ratchadamnoen Nok avenue, from the Royal Plaza intersection to Makawan bridge, will be inaccessible.

Cars will also be barred from both lanes of Phitsanulok road, from Suan Misakawan intersection to Wang Daeng intersection.

On June 9, five designated roads and nearby areas will be off-limits from 6am to 1pm. On June 12, the same roads will be closed from noon to 6pm.

From June 11-14, areas near hotels in which royal guests and heads of state will be in residence, such as the Shangri-La, Oriental and Sukhothai hotels, will be closed.

To facilitate the entourage of Their Majesties the King and Queen and their royal guests to observe the Royal Barge Procession at the Royal Navy Institute (Ratchanavik Sapha), New Arun Amarin road from Siriraj intersection to Anutinsawat bridge and Wang Derm road to the Royal Thai Navy Convention Hall will be closed to traffic on June 12 from 2pm to midnight.

The same day, Maha Rat road, Phra Chan road, Na Phra Lan road and Thai Wang road will be closed from 3pm to 9pm.

On June 13, Maha Rat road, Thai Wang road, Sanam Chai road, Ratchadamnoen Nai avenue, Na Phra That road, Na Phra Lan road and Phra Chan road will be off-limits to all motor vehicles from 4pm to midnight.

During June 12-13, no vehicles will be permitted to park throughout the daytime or at night on either Ratchadamnoen Klang avenue or Ratchadamnoen Nai avenue.

So Omar, if you're lucky and no royal guest arrive or depart in the morning you can land on time else hours of waiting. Expect extra security checks for terrorists and if you're arab maybe extra delay. Immigration long queues. Traffic jams on all motorways in Bangkok area. In worst case many hours delay.
