My new house.....

Recommended Posts

Jacko try installing a couple of roof fans,im sure ive seen them over there even if only on some factory/industrial units, they will fit roughly in the space of a roof tile and as hot air rises in the roof space it will escape through the fan space causing the vanes to spin which in turn will pull more hot air out and therefore cooling the roof space which will have an effect inside the house. The air that is pulled out of the roof space will be replaced through gaps under the roof tiles.

A great deal like what I was suggesting. The difference is the solar powered fans I was suggesting would blow sideways and they are generally set up so little louvres flip up when the fan is on (when it's sunny for the solar cells). The problem with the above, maybe, is just how hard it rains there when it rains. I suspect a fan facing upwards is going to flood the attic.

sorry i guess fan is probably not the right description,it is probably best described as a roof extractor or ventilator and it is inside a cowl so the rain cant get in.also would be a lot cheaper than solar as they should be very inexpensive.

Ah, ozboy, that sounds better and I think I've seen them.

I didn't know they were effective operating passive. I think I've seen things on roofs spinning but I guess I always thought that was some breeze blowing. If that's heat driving them then that is excellent.

They might be cheaper. Cutting a hole in a roof and still keeping the water out might be dicey. A fan blowing sideways out a soffet won't require that, and the notebook sized solar panel would lay on the roof maybe 2 feet away. Now that you mention it, I don't know what a panel 30 cm X 30 cm would cost. Might be more.

No matter. The choice for the guy probably matters less than the concept. Get

some air circulating in that space below the roof and above the ceiling. It will clear air out and not let it heat up to such high temps.

I've seen those rotating roof ventilators over there in the building supplies shops. Not the small residential ones we get in Australia but a larger commercial type one.

I think I will install one in my place when over there next.

The "mystery charge" is the FT Rate. It is indeed a fuel tax but not only that and includes shortfalls that the company experiences and a whole load of other items. The rate from June to september is 0.8544 (85.44 satang) per unit used.

Here is their website: http://www.pea.co.th/eweb/r_rate1.htm

The rate on their website is the old one, used up until May.

Bloody well done Torrenova.

This link explains the mysterious ways of PEA, and how my bill works out.

What a great way to tax the rich, electricity costs go up depending on consumption....by 65% per kwh for >400 kwh. If you use less than 5 kwh...it is free! I need to find a neighbour consuming under 150 KWH/month, run a cable from his house and pay his bill along with mine and save money! :3some

I have unplugged my water cooler after catching tilac filling pans for cooking with chilled water!

A fan that is turned by rising air, because the rising air is lighter (more expanded) than the air above it, then the fan sucks out even more air, sounds like Perpetual Motion, getting more energy than is put in. More likely the fan takes a tiny bit of energy out of the rising air and reduces the outflow slightly.

A teaspoon of water is said to have much more 'fusion' energy than a person will use in his life.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to bore you all further......

This months bill just arrived........units dropped to 491, bill 1816 baht, 900 less. :D

I bought an electric fan and use it in the living room, now the AC only goes on during particularly hot evenings.

Still have bedroom AC all night, but raised setting 1 deg and have got used to it.

Unplugged water cooler.

Draw curtains in afternoon to keep sun off the refrigerator.

Turn TV off when not watching it.......

Unplug my computer when not using it.

After 3 months I will have saved enough for a good soapie..... :D

(I spent 1800 baht on a night out recently, perspective)

Try having a fan blowing the cold air around in the bedroom at night, I started using mine that way, and the aircon set at the lowest possible, but comfortable setting.

It gets really cold that way, and you dont have to depend on the aircons weak fan that burns elec units.

Mine is wall mounted fan and blows cold air all over the room.

I think its much hotter in my village in issan, than in pattaya.

This confuses me........the 'weak' fan on the aircon will still always be running as the AC is on...admittedly on the slowest setting. So no saving there. I use the 'panning' to get all the room cool.

Extra fan running means more consumption and contrary to what people think, a fan gives off heat from the motor.....you feel cooler due to sweat evaporation forced by draught.

You may have a point that the added draught will make it feel cooler and hence I can have a HIGHER setting on the AC (higher temperature number)....the compressor will run less...which is the real consumer of power.

Sure it is hotter in Issan, during the 'hot season'....Pattaya is more humid.

I shall give it a try....roll on the cool season. :D Thanks....

I ran my aircon at the lowest setting, it was quite hot, couldnt cool down the room.

then I aimed my fan upwards above the aircon unit, and it cooled down quite quickly and the room stayed cooler. it has something to do with the air circulation

me thinks the fan blowing all the cool air all around is the key just give it a try, only will cost you a few baht.

after I buy my apartment, I will install those exhaust fans that will blow the hot air out of the room, same as you see in the hong nam

I shall.

The fans in the hong nam might be blowing something else unpleasant out of the room. :D

The air a fan blows out needs to be replaced, perhaps through an open window, presuming it to be cooler out, should be okay. I set my fan up infront of an open door, as in the evenings the roof has heated up and it is well cooler out. So I get a cooler draught.

Don't run an exhaust fan and an AC in the same room together... :D :D

that would make all the water buffalos come to the outside of my room for the cool air :D

I was thinking along the lines of blowing the hot air out in the late afternoon.
