I have bought 4 rings from a lady who has a stall in Carrefour upstairs near Bangkok bank, though sometimes she moves around. She makes all her rings herself from the gold blanks fitting the stones. I bought a kind of spiral gold ring with six diamonds on it from her for 20,000bht (half price sale as now) when I was in Chiang Mai we went to the big jewellry factory and I asked there how much to make me one of these rings if I bought ten pieces, (bit of a mind to take to UK) they said 59,000bht each!!!

So go check her out she most definitely will not rip you off, her rings speak for themselves they all sparkle big!! Right now a little bit quiet so could get a good deal!

I am not an ex-pat but I found rubies and saphires to be the better deal in LOS just as Emeralds are best deal in Columbia.

Mix in smaller diamonds but anything over .25 carats is not a deal in Thailand. Settings are where you can win-- they are cheaper in Thailand but watch for quality and weight. Know your stuff.

I bought a beautiful natural sapphire set in custom white gold setting with 2-- .15 c diamonds for my daughter. Paid about half I would in US.

I bought in BKK on Sukhumvit after checking everywhere.

I did see some deals in Pattaya while changing money at the gold shops.

There are big tourist traps dealing gems so be aware.

Why buy diamonds? Why pay such big money for a rock that isn't rare? I am a romantic, but....why waste big money?

BigChris,

I have brought diamonds & jewelry in Pattaya & as always it is buyer beware. Have used the Diamond Shop on 3rd road & have had good deals outta there, they used to be at Regent Marina but moved. Is run by an American bloke called Dave. He has been involved in the industry in Thailand for 20 or so years & is well known in the town. His phone number is 018614055. Have a chat to him. They are also doing free diamond grading classes at his shop now, had a friend of mine sign up for it last week. Good luck.

Very true! Unless you are buying yellows, pinks etc. Diamonds are a bigger cartel run scam than Myanmar could only wish for!
