I'm just trying to get my ducks in a row before moving to Thailand.

Assuming I buy the right kind of phone for Thailand, is there any advantage, pricewise,of buying it in the USA rather than waiting to buy it in Thailand? If there's not much difference, then I'll just wait and buy one there. But if I can save a bundle by buying one here, then that's what I'll do.

I bought mine here. (In Thailand). You can get a phone at a reasonable price depending on the features that you want. They are on a different band here that the USA also and since American phones are locked it is a problem to use one here. I am not sure if all American phones could be used here?

Buy it in Thailand. No bundle to be saved.

in fact you can get most of the korean or japanese brands cheaper here then in europe or the US (unless you buy it with a contract there) -

MBK is the place to check for the largest selection

I found that it is cheaper to buy one in Pattaya, as I did not have a good one in the States.

Most of the new ones hat they sell in the States are Tri-band, which you need here, or in Europe, so if you have one of these, (Goggle it to see) it is not a problem to unlock it here.

All of the ones that I have seen in Thailand are unlocked, but due to high import taxes, the price is about the same, but you have a wide variety of choices and models.

Thanks everyone. So I buy in Thailand. Now if I an just figure out what kind I want, I'll be set. I'm sort of leaning towards a basic phone without all the gizmos.

For me to use in Chiang Mai & Pattaya, I bought a Motorola V188 Quad Band phone on Ebay. Cost about $60. Payed $10 to have it un-locked. Now I have phone I can use anywhere in the world - change the Sim chip as needed.
